Meet Leah Patton of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Patton.

Leah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my photography journey the beginning of 2019. I’ve always loved art and I thought I would be good at it. I took my entire check from my retail job at the time, and bought a Canon EOS Rebel 7. I started photographing friends and peers for fun. Maybe weeks later, I remember changing my major from Psychology to Photography, having no idea what I was getting myself into. I remember taking my first photo class and it changed my life, that’s how I knew I was a creative all along. Today, I work as a corporate photographer and still creating in my own free time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no. I think all creatives get imposter syndrome so there’s that. I will say in the beginning of learning about photography, I hated the technical things. I was and probably will always be very experimental. I think that’s what brings my true creative side out. Although, working in corporate photography i’ve discovered that knowing all the technical stuff is very important and it’s a great tool to be knowledgeable about it if it’s something you want to do for a living. Also, knowing the technical aspects of photography helps you predict how to move especially when it comes to lighting. Everything works hand in hand!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In the corporate world I am known for my professional headshots and product photography. Outside of corporate, I am known for my creative portrait photography. I love portraits, faces, people. I think it’s a beautiful seeing all the different people of the world and learning who and where people come from.

I’m most proud of my meaningful work, not just the creative stuff but the actual personal work that comes from my heart. I think storytelling with portraits are starting to become something that is becoming more of my lane. Documenting people, places, and things that speak to ME. It gives my life more meaning.

I don’t know what sets me apart from others but one thing I can say is i’m not performative. I put my heart into everything that I do and I really think that shows through my work. I can bring people’s vision to life in the more authentic way. I used to shy away from being so open but I should never have a fear in my heart of being seen. You can love or hate me, regardless i’ve always learn to move with good intention and stand firm in my morals and values. My people and real supporters know that and that’s all that matters to me.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love photo-books from my favorite photographers, photo blogs (specifically tumblr), researching history of photography, films, and simply going outside!
