Hi Sade, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Sade Brown and I’m from Memphis, TN. I’m a chemist by day with a passion for life. I love traveling and living life to best ability. As the mixologist and Owner of Sweetest Taboo, Her ultimate goal is to inspire others to be their best selves while leading a helping hand to those trying to climb the ladder of success.
Sweetest Taboo Bartending service was a brainchild from me being one of the younger siblings and hosting parties in college. Since I was one of the younger siblings, I was always tasked with the job of decorations and making the drinks.
Well, it got to the point where my family would bring empty bottles to get leftover cocktails that I had created for the events. A little background about me is that I am a chemist.
So making the transition to a mixologist was easy. I began my journey by researching what classes and licensure were needed to form a bartending company.
One time, I recall someone saying they were happy that I was family or else I would have to charge them for my drinks. That comment gave me a lightbulb, so after my deep dive into research, I decided to take my hobby more seriously.
I began to take down recipes and ideas for drink creations any chance I got that’s how Sweetest Taboo was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The easy part of Sweetest Taboo was curating the cocktails and creations. My first obstacle was learning the basics of bartending, passing the exam, and getting licensed.
My biggest obstacle part was overcoming anxiety, the fear of failure, and actually getting all the necessary documents needed for a bartending company. Sweetest Taboo is licensed and insured.
One of the hardest parts was getting out of my way and taking the leap of faith. It’s so easy to talk yourself out of doing something before you even start. Self-doubt can be strong but my determination to succeed was stronger.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Sweetest Taboo is a mobile bartending service that specializes in custom cocktails. We are known for curating a custom cocktail experience through our signature cocktail tastings. Each of our cocktail tastings is organized from responses received in the personalized cocktail questionnaire that we distribute to all of our clients.
For example, a client can tell us that they would like cocktails made with whiskey that are red and apple-flavored. From that, we would create 9 tailor-made cocktails. Each with its own ingredients, variation, and explanation. Our mission is to bring people together one sip at a time because we believe that Happy Hour is our Super Power.
One of our most proud accomplishments is that we have expanded beyond Nashville. We have been booked for Memphis, Chicago, and Murfreesboro. We were also proud to offer a group company cocktail mixing class to the Equity Alliance.
They booked us as the relaxation and revitalization part of their company retreat. We thought it was a cool experience that we had a chance to teach them how to decompress and make drinks with simple ingredients that can be found at home.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Creating cocktails with flare makes me happy. I feel like most bartenders make good drinks. But making a great drink is something that can connect with the person consuming it.
It makes me happy when our drinks are conversation starters or ice breakers. It goes from quiet stillness to a murmur of “did you see the glitter in the drinks” or “did you see her face floating in the drink”. Bringing people together makes me happy and creating drinks is a passion that I share that brings a personal experience.
Sweetest Taboo is my baby and as with any proud parent, it’s a heart-warming thing to see something you created bloom into something that gives you an indescribable sense of joy.
