Meet Shannell Nelson of Jewels to Gems

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannell Nelson.

Hi Shannell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Shannell Nelson and I’m a celebrity makeup artist, entrepreneur, and cosmetics brand owner of Jewels to Gems LLC.

I started my beauty business online with products such as premium mink eyelashes, lipsticks, and accessories during the biggest pandemic known to date. I self-funded my business with my job as a food service supervisor on Nellis air force base. From there with the support of my co-workers, I was able to become a military trusted business. I sold my products as a vendor while servicing the air force.

Jewels to Gems LLC was established to enhance women’s natural beauty by providing mobile makeup services and products. Makeup artists, influencers, and beginners benefit from Jewels to Gems by seeking products, recommendations, and lessons in the beauty industry. As a former foster youth makeup became my outlet and gave me the passion to share my talents with other women that need a self-esteem boost or to perfect their craft.

I’ve serviced women who needed cover-ups from domestic violence, foster youths, and women from all walks of life. Building my clients and becoming recommended within my community, has given me the opportunity to tour the United States and broadcast my talents. Atlanta, Nashville, and Los Angeles are my favorite cities to visit and work among others.

The experience I’ve gained in the beauty industry has let me expand my knowledge to other aspiring makeup artists and enthusiasts. I started a mentorship program to give my mentees needed gems to advance them in their careers. It’s still in its infancy stage while working with two makeup artists Aaliyah and Akearaa. They have helped me become successful in mentoring and kick-started more potential mentees.

So far I have boosted their clientele, had them work on multiple productions to add to their resume, and let them experience travel for out-of-state bookings. My guidance along with their determination has made me want to continue my mentorship program. By July 1st I’ll have a 3-month mentorship for aspiring artists and beauty moguls…

In all my efforts my main goal is to establish my business worldwide, so I can in the future open my own group homes in Las Vegas and aid with former foster youth resources. If it wasn’t for the support I received as a former foster youth, I wouldn’t be the entrepreneur I am today. I retired from corporate at the age of 31.

My biggest motivations are my four beautiful children. Even when I wanted to give up, I remember that I’m who they look up to. I look back on the days when I was homeless and pregnant to now. I told myself I will do better for my family and those around me, and I accomplished just that!!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle I faced starting my business was funding it all by myself. I didn’t have one loan or angel investor as they call it. It took me longer to establish but with the support of family, friends, and loyal clients my business is thriving. Jewels to Gems LLC has been a self-funded business for over two years now and will continue until the right investment comes along.

Another struggle was learning to balance being an entrepreneur, working a 9-5 job, and being a full-time mother. Sometimes the world sees you as Wonder Woman, especially your children, but finding that balance where your home life is not affected by the stresses of making a living can get overwhelming. I’m thankful for the mentors in my life that have been there to help guide me and keep me focused on my goals in life and business.

* I would like to give a special mention to John and Lourdes Neff for treating me like their own and giving me the advice and encouragement throughout this journey. Forever grateful for you*

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory I’ll never forget was my 6th birthday. My mom gave me my first makeup kit. It had colored glosses, blushes, and eyeshadows. I had other gifts but the makeup kit I somewhat became obsessed with. My face was a canvas and I wanted to paint. The moment I held a makeup brush in my hand I haven’t let go since!! I call myself the Bob Ross of makeup.
