Rising Stars: Meet Ashlyn Johnson of Nashville Tennessee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlyn Johnson.

Hi Ashlyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started back when I was a college student at Indiana University Bloomington, studying film and cinematography. As part of my major, I had the opportunity to choose an elective, and I decided to take a beginner photography class. That’s when I got my first camera (a Canon T7i) and everything began. I quickly fell in love with the craft, and my background in film translated naturally into photography. From there, I started photographing everything I could—my church, my family, and friends. What started as a passion soon became something I couldn’t imagine not doing. It took me a few years to build my website, grow my social media presence, and develop a client base, but I was committed to the journey. Today, I’m a full-time photographer. I’m still growing and refining my craft, but I truly love what I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I spent so long thinking I wanted to be a Director of Photography out in Hollywood. I even moved out to LA but I quickly realized that life was not for me. I moved back to my home town of South Bend and grew my photography and videography business while working a full time job. However, this move back allowed me to meet my husband who convinced to move to Nashville with him. Starting new in a city is very difficult when all your regular clients are 7 hours away. I’ve spent days working on ads that got me nowhere. I’ve talked to every photographer and person I could to build those relationships. Starting a business from the ground up again after you already built it has been a challenge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer and videographer specializing in portraits and weddings, known for my cinematic style and storytelling approach. Over the years, I’ve grown tremendously in my skill. I’m proud of how far my photography has come. What sets me apart is my versatility. I studied film in school and developed a strong foundation in videography, while also gaining years of hands-on experience in both freelance and studio photography. I’ve worked across nearly every genre, using natural light, studio setups, and everything in between. This is all backed by professional training in both academic and studio environments.

What matters most to you?
Making people happy. I love the reactions people get seeing their photos and the confidence it gives them! I want to make people comfortable and feel confident in themselves.
