Rising Stars: Meet Destiny Talatham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Talatham.

Hi Destiny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in photography really began in middle school when I joined The Yearbook Committee. They allowed us to take photos with their cameras & it truly made me curious of what other perspectives I could find through a lens. It wasn’t until my freshman year in college that I bought my own started kit (Rebel T6) and I just started shooting away. I asked my best friends to model for me and I YouTubed “How to take professional photos” and it led me into the different softwares for editing. My degree was also in Marketing, so you could say I already had an eye for what different avenues of creativity I could venture out to. I decided to make an Instagram page solely just to showcase what photos I’ve taken and for myself to see my growth. Then, I had people asking me what do I charge. I charged very little because I honestly wasn’t in it for the money, I was just ecstatic that people wanted me to capture an important moment for them! As I began to take sessions in and posting them on my pages, the more word of mouth my name got passed around to book more sessions. I didn’t want to stay in one specific area, I really wanted to explore all avenues, so I settled as a “Lifestyle Photographer.” From portraits, seniors, families, newborns, weddings, to mini sessions — I just love being able to be a part of someone’s biggest moments.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has definitely been bumps in the road. I mean, as a full-time student then to working a full-time job, handling a side business for all the other free times during your day can drain you out. There are times I really did not want to do any editing or culling, but making others happy to get their photos back is really want motivates me. To hear feedback from my clients saying how happy they were with their gallery warms my heart over and over again. There’s even times where I doubt myself if I’m even good enough, actually a lot of times I doubt myself. But when my clients post their photos and thank me for them, I know I’m doing a great job.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Lifestyle Photographer, based in Middle Tennessee. I am a lover of capturing your special moments in life! Being able to capture a special moment is so special to me because you get to keep those memories and get to revisit them over and over again. I am most proud of how well I have been able to juggle full-time jobs & school alongside chasing after a hobby I love. It has always been a passion of mine to be a “photographer” growing up, & I think I’m content with reaching that goal so far. I have found that there can be a lot of competition in the creative world, but I tend to surround myself with others who build each other up in this community that help each other be the best they can be. I think that is what sets me apart from other bigger photographers because some can tend to only see the business side of things, but truly I enjoy it for the purpose of making others happy and to let them feel good about theirselves in photos!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Mainly I look up to other photographer friends online. I am honored to be able to join a group chat with other photographers that build each other up, but also help others when there’s an issue we can’t seem to figure out. It helps me and my business for future bumps in the road.
