Rising Stars: Meet Brianna Johnson, Alexis Johnson and Kenna McPherson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Johnson. She and her team share their story with us below:

Co-owner and Founder, Brianna Johnson, introduced the idea of starting a skincare business with the other co-owners, COO Alexis Johnson & Creative Director Kenna McPherson.

Brianna Johnson: My passion for skincare comes from my long tradition of self-care days. This day is one that I would dedicate for me to pamper myself, which entailed using a face steamer, masks, and scrubs to help rejuvenate my body and relax my mind. While doing this more frequently during quarantine, I learned that a multitude of the all-natural products I was buying were not actually all-natural, which led me to create my own. I loved the products so much that I wanted to share them all with you so I hope you enjoy them as much as me. Thank you for supporting and believing in our business!

Kenna McPherson: I had always taken interest in natural skincare products and felt that starting a business would be a nice opportunity to learn as well as make and use my own natural skincare products.

Alexis Johnson: I was interested due to it being difficult to find products that keep our (African American) skin moisturized and most products on the market are not natural and dry your skin out.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. From finding reliable vendors for our containers and ingredients to correctly advertising and marketing our products. This has led to a lot of trial and error. Money management was also something we dealt with when it came to balancing inventory and making sure we were getting back the money we were putting in to make the products. As far as marketing, we had to learn how to keep our target audience interested. Time Management was also something we learned how to navigate through since we all were in school and working. Overall, we are just getting started so we still have a lot to learn but I think we are on a great path.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Brianna Johnson: I am currently a senior studying at Tennessee State University’s Architectural Engineering Department. This upcoming semester, I will begin my graduate studies in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural as well as graduating with my bachelor’s of Architectural Engineering degree at the end of the semester. After graduation, I will continue in my graduate program while also working in the construction field as an engineer.

Kenna McPherson: I am currently working in the healthcare field as a rehabilitation technician. Also, I am studying Health Sciences with a concentration in Therapeutic Studies as an undergraduate student. Soon, I will pursue my graduate studies in Occupational Therapy to become an OT.

Alexis Johnson: I am currently training to be a biopharma technician. I am also still in school aiming to get my degree in Agricultural Science and a concentration in Agriculture Business. With my degree, I plan on opening multiple fresh produce grocery stores around the south, east, and west sides of Chicago in order to combat the food deserts.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Brianna: Being able to make a product that others can benefit from and use makes me really happy. This goes with the skincare business and the products we make but also in my field with the structures and buildings we construct for the general public to live and commune.

Alexis: Being able to make natural skincare products makes me feel happy because not only is it beneficial to me, but it is also beneficial to anybody seeking glowing, moisturized, and healthy skin.

Kenna: Being able to work in my field and take on hobbies that interest me such as making body butters makes me happy because I am able to share my work with others and hopefully share my happiness as well.
