We’re looking forward to introducing you to alectra busey. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning alectra, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think photographers and the work we do are often misunderstood. People usually only see the final images, but not the countless things that happen behind the scenes. There’s editing, planning, setting up and breaking down equipment, organizing shots and locations, and making sure everything runs smoothly for the client. The amount of time, energy, and effort that goes into all of that combined is immense.
This isn’t a complaint…. It’s simply the part that’s most often overlooked. It explains why turnaround times may take longer than expected, and why our rates are set the way they are. There’s so much more to photography than just pressing a shutter—it’s a full process dedicated to delivering the best possible result.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Alectra Elizabeth Busey. I am a professional photographer most known for my INTENSE lighting and working/ touring with some amazing music artists.
As a professional photographer, I’ve come to realize that risk-taking is what drives growth. Some of my biggest breakthroughs have come from stepping outside my comfort zone… whether that meant pursuing unconventional projects, saying yes to unexpected opportunities, or experimenting with new weird techniques and styles. Those risks have led to some of my most meaningful and impactful work, and they’ve helped me carve out a distinct identity in the industry, especially through the way I approach lighting.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Jeremey Saffer was the first who really took me under his wing and thought me about lighting / the photographer world. ‘
from them i went to hallmark institute of photography in Massachusetts , where all of my professors were absolutely amazing. While in Hallmark, that led me to assist for the amazing photographer, Clay Patrick McBride, who also taught me / showed me so many things.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
yes…. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment things shifted for me, but what I can say is this: the road hasn’t been easy. Still, every challenge has been worth it, because I truly love what I do. Having the right support system and surrounding myself with other creatives to collaborate with and learn from has been invaluable.
The photography industry can feel like a dog-eat-dog world….there’s rarely a single “big break,” and things are constantly evolving. My best advice is to stay driven, keep adapting, and always know your worth.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
yes. i am 1000% real and an open book…
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
my creativity lately
