Collin Reynolds shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Collin , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Becoming a Father
It’s something I’ve ran from for a long time because of family history of dying young and not wanting to put someone else through that feeling, but being in this position now myself, I understand.
The feeling of raising the next generation and seeing all of your influence (for better or worse) in a tiny human and trying to do the best to guide them. I can’t speak for everyone, but for me at least it gives me something extra to fight for and yet another reason why I can’t quit.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Collin, but I’m known online as ProperArtist
I’m a freelance oil painter/digital artist that specializes in nerd culture/wrestling themed art.
“Simply Phenomenal & Instantly Classic, but Always ProperlyMAD”
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom I’d say has been my biggest supporter since I can remember.
In her own words, she’s always known I’d have all this for myself
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
You have to keep going even when it hurts.
Sure some loses take more time to reset than others, but as long as you learn from them each time you never truly lose. Enough baby steps eventually add up to a mile.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My fiance is who i like to bounce ideas off of these days. She’s been my best friend for 15+ years and knows how I see art so when I ask her opinion she knows what I’m looking for but also gives her perspective through a fresh pair of eyes. She’s an artist in her own right as well so she can give me tips on certain areas I like. She’s even helped me step up my merch game.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
You have to.
So what if no one else cares in the moment, as long as you’re giving it all you’ve got then you can look back and be proud of what you were able to achieve. Maybe the praise comes after you’re dead and buried but even in as a ghost of the past I’d like people to know I gave it everything I had.
