We recently had the chance to connect with Pierce Alexander and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Pierce, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I try to avoid screens as much as possible for first the part of my day, so I usually start most days by making some coffee and going for a short walk to clear my head. After that, I’ll typically do a light stretch and eat breakfast. This is something that might be unusual but I almost always spend about ten minutes just thinking about what I want out of the day. I also try to remind myself that I’m very lucky that I get to do what I do every day, and focus my energy on positive affirmations. It’s somewhat similar to meditation, but I try to let go of any sort of negative emotions that are clouding my mind.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a singer-songwriter, and my music sits somewhere between indie rock, indie pop, and baroque pop. I like to play around with orchestral arrangements and some unusual chord changes, so it ends up sounding a little different from what people might normally think of as indie rock. I’ve got a new record coming out this November called I Don’t Know How to Behave Online, and I’ve been putting out a few singles from it this year.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I’d say my early 20s. A lot of my first full-length album, The Minutehand, came from experiences I had between 2019 and 2022. That was a time when my life was changing pretty drastically as I transitioned into adulthood, and of course it was also right in the middle of the pandemic and lockdown. I probably wrote more music during that stretch than at any other point in my life, and some of those songs even carried over into this new record. Now that this album is finished, it feels like that chapter has served its purpose, and I’m excited to be starting a new one.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell myself to enjoy the moment. I was always pretty driven, even when I was younger, but sometimes I think that got in the way of appreciating the smaller things. I’ve gotten a lot better at it now, but it took a while to learn.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I think a lot of people think that with enough will power, they can stay off of social media when they’re working hard on something. But no matter how much will power you have, it will fail at a certain point. I personally find it way too distracting when I’m trying to accomplish something. I wanted a way to make it impossible for me to check social media more than a couple times per day, so I found an app that really has done wonders.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Usually I feel the most at peace when I’m away from all the noise and out in nature. I find hiking very therapeutic, especially when it’s less crowded. There’s also just something about the rhythm of walking for miles that calms my mind.
