We recently had the chance to connect with Ash Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ash, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me usually starts with a good cup of coffee and some quiet time reading my Bible and praying — it’s how I like to get centered before the day really starts. After that, I’ll take my dog for a walk and spend a little time with my husband before diving into work.
Every day looks a little different, but most of the time I’m creating social media content, recording in the studio, writing new songs, rehearsing with the band, or traveling to play shows. There’s always something going on, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a busy life, but it’s a really great one.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Ash Taylor — a country music recording artist and songwriter based in Nashville, originally from Bakersfield, California, home of the legendary “Bakersfield Sound.” I like to say my music has a California country soul with a Nashville edge. I grew up surrounded by classic country, but I’ve always loved blending that traditional influence with a modern, energetic feel that’s true to who I am.
Beyond being an artist, I’m also passionate about storytelling — whether that’s through my songs, my podcast ASH-PHALT, or the behind-the-scenes content I share with fans. My husband, Chris, and I also run a YouTube channel and are currently finishing up a cookbook together, which has been such a fun and creative project.
Right now, I’m touring on my “Stuck on Indiana” tour and getting ready to release “This Town Built Me (Extended Edition)” — a seven-and-a-half-minute version of my single that fans are calling the country version of “Free Bird.” It’s a full-circle moment for me, celebrating where I came from while continuing to push country music forward.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That would definitely be my Nana. She’s always been one of my biggest supporters and truly believed I could do anything I set my mind to. From the time I was little, she was constantly lifting me up, encouraging me to chase my dreams, and reminding me to always give my best.
She’s also the one who introduced me to country music. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting with her and listening to legends like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette — those songs and stories stuck with me and shaped who I am as an artist. I honestly wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today without her love, support, and the influence she had on my life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. Quitting isn’t something that comes naturally to me — it’s just not in my DNA — but I came very close in 2020 when the pandemic hit. My husband and I both lost our jobs, we lost our home, and everything we had worked so hard to build in music seemed to disappear overnight. It felt like our entire world had just crumbled.
It took a couple of years to start over and rebuild everything from the ground up. That season really tested us in ways we’d never experienced before, and for the first time in my life, the thought of giving up actually crossed my mind. But I’m so grateful that I didn’t. We kept pushing forward, trusting that God still had a plan, and now looking back, I can see how that struggle shaped who I am — not just as an artist, but as a person. It made me stronger, more grounded, and more grateful to be here doing what I love today.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — what you see is really who I am. I’ve always made it a point to be genuine and authentic in everything I do, whether that’s on stage, online, or off the clock at home. I think people can feel when something’s real, and for me, music has always been about connection and honesty.
Of course, the public version of me might be a little more polished — that’s part of being a performer — but at the core, it’s still me. I laugh a lot, I’m goofy, I care deeply about people, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. What you see on social media or at a show is the same person my family and friends know. I never want to lose that realness, because that’s what makes the music and the journey meaningful.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I’ve worked really hard over the past few years to find peace in most moments of life, but I feel it most deeply when I’m out in nature. There’s just something about being near the water, hiking through the woods, or sitting quietly surrounded by trees that helps me slow down and breathe.
Reading my Bible and spending time in prayer out there makes me feel especially close to my Creator. There’s such a calm that comes from being surrounded by His creation — it reminds me that even in the chaos of life, He’s always present and there’s beauty all around us if we just take the time to see it.
