Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex King.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m Alex King. I sing and play guitar in a band called Sicard Hollow.
I grew up off of Sicard Hollow Road in Birmingham, Alabama. That’s where I was born and raised, and that’s where the band’s name comes from. My parents bought me a guitar when I was 12. I played a bit but didn’t ever stick with it, and just put it down. I didn’t feel a passion for it yet. I wasn’t introduced to bluegrass music growing up. I had no idea about it. I really didn’t find it until about 5, maybe 6 years ago.
I moved to Nashville when I was 20 and found myself surrounded by all these incredible musicians and it inspired me to start playing more. One thing lead to another, and I met Will Herrin (mandolin) and Matt Rennick (fiddle). Sicard Hollow was then accidentally formed… I had no intention of trying to start something serious. Along our journey, we picked up Parrish Gabriel (upright bass) which completes our current lineup as a 4-piece jam grass unit. It’s been a real blessing so far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like it has been relatively smooth, but it’s almost impossible to not struggle a little bit here and there. I mean, off the get-go, our first bass player had an accident with a circular saw and almost lost his thumb. This was very early in our career, and at the time, was very defeating because all of sudden we didn’t have a bass player anymore. You have to learn to adapt. I realized in a split second; everything can change. We all have made many sacrifices to make this work, and that in itself can be a struggle. We all continue to make sacrifices. We really had to believe in this thing we have. If we didn’t, I think we would’ve given up a while ago… from all the overnight drives, sleeping on floors, payless shows, all the time we invest… you gotta love it and believe in it. The road may not be smooth all the time, but I’m just grateful we found the road we are on… some bands never find their road.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m mostly just trying to stay on the road as much as possible. We have a lot of great shows and festivals planned for this year, including our own Spring tour, Peach Music Festival, and a few others we’re not allowed to talk about yet. It’s gonna be a big year and we can’t wait to see some new places and meet some new people.
Any big plans?
My plan for the future is to write and play as much damn music as I possibly can. We are just getting started, and that is very exciting to me! I’m looking forward to traveling around this year playing shows and we got some fun dates ahead of us. I am beyond stoked to release our second studio album later this year, as well. We put a lot of love into it, and are eager to get it out to the public. No big changes planned currently. Just stay true to ourselves, and keep our nose to the grindstone. No better time than now to get to work. I’m looking forward to it all. Good things are coming.
