Check Out Bex Adams’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bex Adams.

Hi Bex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Nashville in 2022, ready to build an authentic life that I loved. In my first few months, I created daily rituals, and sought out consistency and community that would make Nashville feel more like home. Yoga had been a part of my life in the past but it had faded in the years leading up to my move. I decided to return to a consistent yoga practice and joined a yoga studio three minutes away from my apartment. In addition to all the changes in my life, I was also carrying the weight of my chronic pain that had made daily life challenging in recent years. Almost a year later, I chose to pursue a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at my local studio.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, I experienced years of chronic pain. After countless specialist visits, physical therapy, and epidural shots in my back, I was at a place where the pain darkened so much in my life. I thought that ease and comfort in my body was not possible anymore. I felt a sense of betrayal and anger toward my body, it was a relationship in desperate need of attention and love.

Reconnecting with my yoga practice, along with other types of movement and rituals that offered me peace, joy, and a sense of community, brought me back to my body and my present moment. While navigating daily discomfort and pain, I went to my yoga mat. It gave me the opportunity to process some of the emotional pain and rebuild trust with my body.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Yoga reframed what I could and could not do. I could do the things that I didn’t think I could or I could make one tweak or adjustment and be able to be there. It taught me the power of modifications and variations to bring people in rather than create barriers to the practice.

There were many times in yoga classes where I had to modify poses or make a different choice based on my needs, but I was doing it. I was living in my body again. That’s how I want to serve my students — by creating a space where you don’t have to push through pain or prove anything. In my classes, I empower students with agency, encourage them to listen to their unique needs, and offer choices that support a practice that’s personal, flexible, and truly their own.

Sometimes, my pain still pokes its head into my life. But when someone asks about it, I get to say that it doesn’t live with me the same way anymore. I know that my story with chronic pain isn’t everyone’s story. But my experiences allow me to teach with an understanding that healing isn’t linear and share this practice with others in a way that can be transformative in their own lives. Yoga is not something to be accomplished, it is a forever practice.
