Check Out Brooke August’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke August.

Hi Brooke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born and raised in Mississippi. I’ve been singing ever since I was a little girl. My mom says I used to make up songs in the bathtub I always loved performing and singing in choir and musical theatre. I always dreamt of pursuing acting and singing. For real, I wanted to be a superstar when I was little. For some reason, I always just thought of it as a faraway dream that I would fantasize about and didn’t think I could really do it.

I decided to go with a more “realistic” path and went to hair school and loved doing hair until I got an opportunity to go to Los Angeles. I did some auditions and took some acting classes and realized it was where I needed to be. If I don’t chase this “far away” dream I’ve had all my life I will regret it. So I moved to LA! Living in Hollywood was life-changing experience and I missed home so much. I started getting serious about writing my own songs and recording.

After setting my mind on songwriting I moved to Nashville. I now work at the coolest salon on music row. I have the best support system and “Nash fam”. I am collaborating with some amazingly talented artists, musicians, and producers. I have four songs out on Spotify! The newest release is my Christmas song! “Hohoho Phaze” which has been the MOST FUNN. I have two shows this month and I’m staying busy juggling my music career and my hair career.

My clients are so supportive of my music and I love them! My goals are to book a tour, continue to grow and work with talented people, and create and release More music. And every time I get down on myself I remember how I thought I was just going to stay in Mississippi, do hair forever, and fantasize about my dream life. But look at me now, living it!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving to LA was really hard for me. Being so far away from my family was Something I could not prepare for. I was broke, hustling, and homesick the whole time. My Nana Was really sick and I couldn’t be there when she went to the ICU so I literally said fuck this and for in my little Chevy spark and drove all the way to Mississippi to be with her. She is alive and well and the strongest woman I know. You already know I wrote a song about this experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist and have gained an amazing clientele since moving here. My hair career has funded my music career and I’m so thankful that I have been able to work in the beauty industry while being an independent artist. I have traded my hair services for music services. I do my best friend’s hair and he produces my music, so it’s a solid trade.

Speaking of my bestie, he helped me write and produced my latest release- “HoHoHo Phaze” I can say I am most proud of this project. The process of writing it and creating content for the promotion has been so much fun.

Right now I do a series called “Mistletoe Hottie Looks” turning Dollar general finds into burlesque, project runway looks. 11-year-old Brooke would be so proud bc we are taking playing dress-up to the next level.
