Check Out Brooke Stevens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Stevens.

Hi Brooke, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a photographer/videographer based out of Nashville, Tennessee. I moved to town around ten years ago looking for a photography job at a non-profit where I could utilize my documentary photography background. I eventually began shooting musicians because, well, it’s Nashville. I started my production company, Baby Horse Productions, several years ago and am producing music videos, along with photographing recording sessions, live shows, and single/album covers. I also love photographing food and try and talk my friends into making cookbooks with me. Through my contacts in the music business I’ve been able to work for non-profits in the way I originally aspired to, it just took a bit longer then I was expecting. I’ve also been dipping a toe in artist management and art direction, which has been a great learning experience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everyone has obstacles and challenges in their career, especially those trying to make a living creatively. At the end of the day, my biggest obstacle has been myself. Taking responsibility and control of my mental health changed not just my personal life but the way I build my business. I can now make decisions without being crippled with self-doubt and move away from situations that I don’t benefit from without guilt.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think luck has a role in some places in my life. I’m lucky to have the friends and family I have for instance. As far as my career, I’m not so sure. I’ve spent 20 years trying to make a living creatively. I still. have a ways to go but I’m very happy with where I’m at. I didn’t come to it by luck. I came by it by sacrificing a lot. I live in a tiny house, I keep my expenses down and I prioritize traveling and life experiences instead of things like big car payments. I’m building my business one step at a time while trying to support and encourage others doing the same.
