Today, we’d like to introduce you to Caitlyn McLaughlin.
Caitlyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
While I was in school for accounting at the time, I was offered an opportunity to fill in for someone working at a nightclub who was a graphic designer and Visual Jockey.
I was introduced to the world of graphic design and met a lot of very talented artists and designers. While doing graphics, I realized instead of using stock photos, it would be cool to take my own pictures to shape, mold, and add whatever I wanted to.
I saved up for my first DSLR camera and began shooting everything I could. Around this time, I also started to gain a love of makeup and eventually became a self-taught artist. Having so many passions and interests but not enough time to really do them all, I had the idea to start doing fantasy portraits with my friends.
I would do hair and makeup, style outfits, and plan the overall concept of the shoot, then be able to edit and digitally draw in whatever details and things I felt make the portrait a true piece of art. It gave me the satisfaction of enjoying all my favorite hobbies while making a successful career.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting and running a business is never easy. In the beginning, it was stressful to make sure I had all my ducks in a row when it came to the proper paperwork and registrations and making sure I had a good accountant.
Then, trying to narrow down my target audience and who I want to market to. Once I managed all those, I just maintained my presence online and in the community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Photographer and Graphic Artist.
I specialize in fantasy and creative portraiture and add in my digital art flare. I’m proud of my ability to meld all my talents into one career and utilize my knowledge of many different art forms to create works like no one else.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The photography industry is sadly a little over-saturated, and with the big shift to video content, photographers aren’t booking as much. You really have to stand out amongst a sea of talent.
