Check Out Carli Brill’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carli Brill.

Hi Carli, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a large family of baseball players. Music wasn’t really something we discussed or knew much about. I was a kid doing regular kid things including watching TV/movies- and this is where it began. I discovered a lot of iconic music through film and TV when I was young. One of my earliest memories of this experience was watching A Knight’s Tale and hearing Queen for the very first time! Through this, I realized early on that music can be a powerful tool no matter our age or where we come from.

When I was about 12 years old, my family bought me my first guitar and I began to play music mostly alone in my room. I spent the majority of my young adult life playing at churches and covering songs for fun but it wasn’t until my early 20s that I began to really dive into my artistry. Since then, songwriting has been quite a self-discovery process for me, and releasing music took it to a whole other level! I like to say that if you want to grow and learn more about yourself, make some art and then share it with the world. What an interesting experience it has been.

In writing and sharing the music I want to exemplify the importance of standing out and “coloring outside of the lines” if you will. Not simply in the clothes we wear or what kind of coffee we like, but rather in the way we live our everyday lives. We humans often feel the need to put ourselves into this box that society has created. But why? The box can be good and serve a purpose at times but knowing when it’s wise or even just okay to break outside of that box is what I hope to inspire.

And this begins with asking ourselves “why.” I hope to make people feel a little bit more comfortable to be honest, to question, and to discover their true selves through music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Practically speaking it’s been smooth.

I have a guitar and the ability to play and sing and write songs. Though I didn’t just wake up one day and have these abilities. Lots of practice goes into that and songwriting has been the most difficult out of all of these. Internally it’s been a struggle.

I have struggled my entire life with imposter syndrome and feeling very much like an outcast. What can I say- I am my own worst enemy. As time goes on I’m learning more and more of how to get out of my own way. I find that gratefulness really puts this into perspective for me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician and songwriter! I exclaim this because it has taken me a while to say that boldly for myself.

I’m deeply inspired by things of the past. I write a lot of introspective songs about life with a vintage feel. Retro-pop is what I’m calling it but genres are so fluid these days so who really knows! Some of my influences are The Beach Boys, The Zombies, Simon and Garfunkel, and The Everly Brothers.

Sorry, I don’t have some obscure bands you’ve never heard of but I’m a believer that classics are classics for a reason!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I’ve learned about the importance of community, loving our neighbors, and taking care of each other. Sharing what we can and giving something back to this world.
