Today we’d like to introduce you to Cas Cleo.
Hi Cas, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in rural Northern Virginia and moved to Nashville in 2016 to pursue music. I’d been songwriting since I was about eight, but I didn’t realize people actually wrote their own songs until I got to Nashville, so originally, I moved just to be a singer.
When I first started out, I was writing and performing Folk and Singer-Songwriter music because that’s what I grew up listening to, and it felt like a natural fit coming from a more rural, mountainous area. In 2019, I released a few Folk songs with some friends, and they did pretty well for what they were.
In 2020, I found a new producer and decided to shift toward more Indie-Pop production, something in the vein of early Gracie Abrams or Clairo. Since then, I’ve made four EPs and several standalone singles with that same producer. The most recent EP has more of a Dream-Pop/ Indie-Rock feel.
There have definitely been a lot of highs and lows along the way, the lowest being just this past May, when I nearly left Nashville and gave up altogether out of sheer exhaustion from the industry. But then, just a month later, I signed a record deal after something in me said to give it one last shot. I’m so glad I listened, and now I’m working on my twelve song debut album.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the biggest struggles have been confidence and missed opportunities / disappointments. When you’ve been working towards your passion for so long, there will eventually be big career opportunities that pop up. But an artist career can be a strange and unsteady one and too many times so many opportunities have fallen through no fault of my own. It can be hard though and did take a hit on my confidence for a long time. I just had to keep reminding myself and start believing that if something was fleeting it was because something better was waiting. Even if I didn’t believe it at first, I eventually started to when I would say it to myself everyday.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Dream-Pop / Indie-Rock artist under the name Cas Cleo. I’m most proud of my growth as an artist over the past few years and perseverance. I think at the moment, (at least from what I can tell on social media) I’m most known for my lyrics. I value honest lyrics over everything else in music, and the more specific the better. Although that has put me in some sticky situations over the years when someone figures out one of my songs is about them haha. I think what may set me apart from others is that it’s impossible for me to write a song with lyrics that aren’t completely 100% accurate to what I’m feeling or what I’m writing about. I sometimes envy people that can write great songs about situations that are imaginary, but I do feel like when I perform if I was to sing something imaginary, I wouldn’t be able to convey authentic emotions. I like to write songs that put me back into a specific place and time, whether that time happened for a few minutes, or months It’s like making little time capsules of emotion and visuals.
