Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Hammer
Charles, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey from a small-town upbringing, to becoming a healthcare leader and now entrepreneur, exemplifies what I hope is a testament of resilience and passion for making a difference. Growing up in the town of Livingston TN, I was surrounded by the simplicity of small town living, agricultural work, and the “everyone knows everyone” lifestyle. I had little exposure to career paths beyond my immediate surroundings. Shortly after graduating high school I was “socially guided” to enroll at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville with a major in business. Despite my parents’ objections, I eventually left college and joined the workforce. After navigating through various jobs such as working in tobacco fields, hauling hay, working in a factory, and even a stint as a death metal band vocalist, I found my calling in healthcare.
My journey took a pivotal turn when I enrolled in a nursing program, ultimately leading me to roles in emergency medicine. With a relentless drive for learning and improvement, I earned degrees ranging from Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and eventually I received my Masters of Business Administration (MBA). My dedication to patient care and leadership culminated in contributions to nursing literature and recognition as a subject matter expert in emergency department overcrowding. I even had the honor of being lead author in a 2022 publication for The Journal of Emergency Nursing.
However, my entrepreneurial spirit was ignited by a desire to extend my impact beyond the hospital walls. In 2023, amidst my flourishing career in healthcare, my lifelong friend Derik Boles and I launched Music City Taco, Nashville’s pioneering taco “pop-up” venture. Rejecting conventional food business models, I envisioned a dynamic approach to culinary service that resonates with community engagement and affordability. Music City Taco aims not only to satisfy appetites but also to evoke joy and connection through exceptional food experiences. Music City Taco delivers quality products at accessible prices, fostering moments of happiness and enjoyment for our customers.
For me, entrepreneurship is an extension of my ethos as a servant leader—someone dedicated to enriching lives and fostering positivity. My journey from healthcare professional to taco innovator underscores the power of embracing change and pursuing dreams with unwavering determination. As I continue to evolve, I remain committed to inspiring others to discover their purpose and make meaningful contributions to the world around them. My ultimate goal is to serve and inspire, which I hope I do on a daily basis.
In the ever-changing landscape of Nashville’s culinary scene, Charles Hammer stands as a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. Whether in emergency rooms or at taco pop-ups, his story reminds us all to embrace opportunities, cultivate resilience, and strive for excellence in every endeavor.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have encountered several significant challenges in recent years, including the loss of my mother two years ago and navigating through the global pandemic of 2020. These experiences have imposed considerable demands on my life. Throughout these trials, I have consistently prioritized my goals while managing personal hardships. I have continually pushed myself to new limits, whether physically, mentally, or professionally.
One example that comes to mind is when I committed to a Ironman triathlon while weighing nearly 300 pounds. Recognizing the need for change in my life, particularly in terms of my health and well-being, I dedicated myself to a rigorous regimen of diet and exercise. As a result, I successfully shed nearly 90 pounds, completed the 70.3 Ironman, and maintained a full-time job as a nurse.
During my time in graduate school, I simultaneously continued to work on the frontlines of healthcare while pursuing my doctoral degree. This period was marked by numerous challenges, yet I maintained a steadfast mindset each day: I am now in the position I once aspired to achieve.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My career in healthcare began over eleven years ago as a patient transporter, marking the inception of my journey toward leadership. Uncertain of the exact path at the time, my fascination with healthcare solidified during my initial exposure to the bustling environment of an emergency room. Witnessing the efficiency and expertise of nurses and doctors captivated me instantly, igniting a passion that has driven my career ever since.
For five years, I served as an emergency room nurse, delivering clinical care at the bedside while also assuming managerial responsibilities. Concurrently pursuing my doctoral degree, I specialized in emergency department overcrowding, becoming a recognized authority in implementing strategies to optimize patient flow and throughput within high-volume settings. In 2020, my research culminated in the publication of “Enhancing Hospital-Wide Patient Flow to Reduce Emergency Department Crowding and Boarding” in the Journal of Emergency Nursing. This publication significantly advanced my reputation as an expert in the field, enabling me to disseminate best practices globally.
Presently, I leverage my expertise as an interim leader in emergency services, routinely assuming managerial and directorial roles in diverse emergency departments. Drawing from extensive experience, I contribute innovative ideas and proven best practices to enhance patient flow, thereby improving both patient care delivery and hospital staff satisfaction. My overarching goal is to share insights that optimize operational efficiencies and elevate healthcare outcomes worldwide.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Personally, I find great fascination in Lore, a podcast exploring global folklore, which consistently expands my knowledge with each episode. Primarily I enjoy listening to a podcast that I can learn something from. I also enjoy the Golf Subpar podcast, hosted by Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz, former PGA Tour professionals. Their “E 9” segment, featuring a series of nine questions posed to guests, never fails to entertain and enlighten me. Recently, I had the privilege of being interviewed on the podcast What’s In Your Cup? hosted by my friend Seth Melton. During the interview, I had the opportunity to discuss various aspects of my life, including my upbringing and the evolving challenges I face, as well as what inspires and fulfills me on a daily basis.
Most of my reading revolves around healthcare. I try to stay up to date on current issues or changes that are taking place in our profession. I should probably try and read for pleasure more often, but I always find myself researching healthcare related topics.
