Today we’d like to introduce you to Christieanna Martin.
Hi Christieanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography was something I was drawn to from a very early age. It started when I moved to Africa for a gap year at 17 years old. I purchased a small digital camera in order to simply document life and that was the slow beginning! I’d photograph everything around me; the landscape, animals, people and cultures and knew it would be a way for me to tell other people’s story. After that was college where I continued to travel and document things through photography. This included a lot of self timer photos so I could be the subject, while also being very still and simply photographing images as they unraveled. During the pandemic I started photographing more families as a way to get outside and interact with people and fell in love with it even more. I started paying more attention to natural prompts and ideas to play with the kids and bring about natural emotion while always following the light and allowing it to create harsh shadows and lines. Now I go back and forth between weddings in the Spring and Fall and lots of indoor family sessions on where I’m either following bedtime routines or morning coffee talks with the family…documenting in it’s most natural form.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say overall it’s been a very consistent road – which I’m incredibly grateful for. Photography has always brought joy into my life and if I stray from that then I know I’ve booked too much. I work hard to have sessions that align with the feeling of telling someones story well, which always has a very vulnerable and raw feeling to it. There is of course always the struggle of wanting “one more booking” and maxing out your calendar, but to be honest, I’ve enjoyed having open weekends a lot more this year. It’s allowed me to truly focus on each shoot individually and create the best work and memories for them that I can.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a storyteller at heart and would be known for my travel and humanitarian photography, life-style family sessions and weddings. I love photographing these as they unfold, with little prompting and posing, but a lot of attention to detail. I’m am genuinely most proud of the way I can connect with children and others…making them feel comfortable and like they are beautiful and worthy of being photographed. I’ve photographed in slums around the world and very high end wedding locations but am able to find a commonality to everyone which is helpful. I believe this element also sets me a part from others in that it’s not just “another session” but something I truly look forward to being a part of. I also think my candidness in photos shines through and many people enjoy that “go with the flow” style.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
