Check Out Christine Radlmann’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Radlmann.

Christine Radlmann

Christine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a singer in country cover bands for 10 years or so before I hooked up with Sean Garnhart and Colin McConnell, who were in an original pop/rock music band. I couldn’t believe the quality of their originals. It didn’t take long for us to realize that the country lane was the right fit for us based on my vocals, their musicianship, and our shared love of songwriting that tells stories. We formed Southpaw during the pandemic and recorded our entire debut country album “Unhitched”–plus a music video–in that time.

Nashville was among the first cities to play our music on the radio, and in 2022 we were nominated for two Josie Music Awards in Nashville: Country Group of the Year and Female Country Vocalist of the Year, the latter of which I won. Since then we’ve been blazing forth with three more singles and our sophomore album on the way, and we’re nominated for seven Josie Music Awards this year. We’ll be playing two shows in Nashville in October, with more on the horizon. Our current single, “Three More Hours,” is an ode to Broadway in Nashville.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Fortunately, I love a good bumpy ride! In all seriousness, we went into this with a good attitude: Let’s make great country music and see where it takes us.

It was that simple and pure. We didn’t expect to have come so far in a little over two years. The three of us have an incredible work ethic, and I’ve always believed that the harder you work, the luckier you get.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I went to graduate school for creative writing, with poetry being my favorite coursework, and I’ve had many poems published over the years. I love that I get to use that part of my brain while writing songs with my bandmates, and put poetry to music.

I’m so proud that our song “Your Name” was nominated for Country Song of the Year at the 2023 Josies because that was the most difficult yet most gratifying song to write. If I can put lyrics into the world that people connect with–that makes me happy. For me, songwriting is much more than just coming up with a catchy melody–I take lyrics very seriously.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We often use the tagline that Southpaw is “country music with an East Coast attitude.” When we first started distributing our music, folks were surprised to hear that we hail from New Jersey, and some scoffed at our roots. When DJs interviewed me, many would tease me about my Jersey upbringing.

But our roots infuse our country music with an unexpected edge, something that’s hard to put your finger on but you know it when you hear it. We’re thrilled that so many listeners are liking what we’re bringing to the country music table, and there’s much more on the horizon. I read a quote recently that gave me a giggle: First they laugh; then they copy.
