Today we’d like to introduce you to Colman Connolly
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born into a musical family. My dad is a world-class button accordion player from Ireland who has performed with Sting and others, and my mom is a flute player. My dad’s father made button accordions for a living, and his uncle is a renowned fiddle player. On my mom’s side, her uncle, Peter McCann, was a prominent Nashville songwriter. I grew up playing Irish music in pubs and bars with my parents and their Irish music friends, competing in Ireland several times. At 16, I won the International Accompaniment Competition.
I also grew up singing Christmas carols in my family choir. At age 6, I began teaching myself piano through YouTube. By 8th grade, I took up guitar and bass, inspired by a newfound love for classic rock music.
As a sophomore in high school, I founded a classic rock/soul/pop cover band called *The Low Darts*, where I sing lead vocals and play keys and guitar. I filmed and produced promotional videos from my basement to advertise our gigs. As of 2025, we’ve reached 3 million total views and gained 36,000 subscribers.
Now, I’m an Audio Production student at MTSU, playing with and producing for local artists, including my friends Savannah Span and Josie James. I’ve been writing songs since 4th grade and am planning to record and release them in 2025.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s mostly been a smooth road, for which I’m very grateful. I’ve had strife along the way, especially as a young teenager leading and producing a band of five older kids. I was 15 when I founded the Low Darts, and the other members were 15-19. Egos sometimes got involved and I had to learn when to be confrontational, when to be a mediator, when to listen, and when to be a leader.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a musician, songwriter, producer, singer, and pianist. I’m just in the nascent stages of my career now, but if I were to be “known” for anything, it’d be the Low Darts band. You can find a recent video of us here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VAHQ8Nfcs0
In the Irish music community, I’m known best as a piano accompanist. I love it! I think I’m a fast learner, am ambitious, and have a good work ethic. I am also a huge geek when it comes to music trivia, and I listen to a lot of different types of music to inform my production and arrangement decisions.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family deserves credit—my mom, my dad, my three younger siblings (all talented in their own right), my grandma, and my extended family in the USA and Ireland. They’ve always inspired me, supported me, and never held me back, even paying for music lessons and equipment. My teachers in elementary school through college have also been a big inspiration; Ms. Bettke and Dr. Dent deserve special mentions. Many would call it unwise to do what I’m doing—uprooting my life for what most would consider a long-shot career in the music industry—but I couldn’t imagine any other path.
