Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Moser.
Hi Dana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in California, if I wasn’t at the beach or in a pool, I was running through the sprinklers. While raising my family, I started working in the aquatics department at the local YMCA to be close to my boys who were on the club swim team and the High School swim team, as I was in High School.
I started as a lifeguard and worked my way up to Aquatics Director, gaining knowledge and experience and certifications neccessary for managing a community pool and all the activities that happen there. I also coached US Masters Swim Team, High School and club swim teams, That was 20 years ago. It wasn’t long before I took to the road and started teaching swim lessons at HOA’s and private pools.
I have used my experience to develop my own style of swim instruction with proven success. Using songs and games I turn the impossible into possible and fear into fun because swimming should be and is fun. Confidence grows in all aspects of our lives as we learn how to be water safe. “Swim with Coach Dana” supports and respects each indvidual’s journey in getting there.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Obstacles and challenges are all around us. I use those to strengthen my resolve to save lives one swim lesson at a time. This is my passion and I have made it my mission. On a business level, the challenge is always finding water space. You can’t learn to swim without water so thank you to the city of Murfreesboro for providing water space. Personal challenges come daily with time management. Time is really the boss and is always telling me what to do and when to do it. With my students, the challenge is gaining their trust so they will do what is sometimes very scary for them.
Everyone can swim, you just need to know how. It is always difficult to convince a non-swimmer that the human body is bouyant and can float. And it is different for every body type. Coach Dana’s definition of swimming is, if you can float on your back, you can swim. Because we float to live.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I was in Bora Bora not long ago, swimming in the world’s most beautiful torquoise lagoon. I observed the trepidation of a tourist who only put their toes in the water. Ninety percent of all family vacations are around water yet according to the CDC May 2024 report, 40 million US adults cannot swim. The American Red Cross states that 54% of adults do not have basic swimming skills. So, obviously, we humans are drawn to water, but cannot keep ourselves safe in it, which creates fear and uncertainy. I help people overcome that so they can enjoy their vacations, whether for themselves or their children.
I specialize in improving people’s quality of life through the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of water.
My clients tell me that I am very good at what I do. (shoulder shrug, hands up). Being older, I have years of experience with children and I understand them. I also have many years of experience teaching children and youth in my church. I have also participated in many swim stroke specific seminars, Water Safety Instructor courses and have been a certified lifeguard instructor. Put all that together and you have “Swim with Coach Dana’s” unique progression and swim lesson plans that are fun and memorable and life enhancing.
I feel we learn best through music and songs and games so I have written songs to teach and guide the lessons. We play games making scary swim skills camouflaged while learning them, like going all under. I use object lessons and repeated phrases so students understand the physics of swimming, like floating. I also teach water safety rules along with swimming skills for wise lifelong choice making while around water. There is only one me with my experience, creativity, and love of the water – therefore, my swim instruction is fine-tuned and unique and it works.
Any big plans?
In the 21st century, with social media and on-line learning and sales, the success of a business needs to not only be available through brick and mortor one on one learning, but also available to the world through the world wide web and cloud.
My plans include having a product on-line for anyone anywhere in the world to access and either teach themselves or teach others how to swim or as Tsireya says it, to teach “the way of water”. (Avatar) Swimming is really very simple.
I want to teach the world to swim, in perfect harmony – human body with water. I want to expand awareness to the human family that water has the same effect on all humans, not just little people, just like gravity. We have to have the highest respect, appreciation and understanding of water and those effects and abide by certain rules. We have to know how to use water in our favor to reduce the natural consequences of long submergen to reduce the percentage of deaths by drowning. That is my ultimate goal – one lesson at a time.
Maybe a swim school franchise is in my future. Who knows? Only time will tell. Thank you for asking.
