Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionne Stokley.
Hi Dionne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve shown creative tendencies from a young age. By the age of four, I was already drawing detailed portraits of women adorned with boots and earrings an early glimpse into my fascination with style and expression. I never quite fit into the traditional school environment and often felt like the odd one out.
At 12, my family began moving frequently across the country, making my middle and high school years a bit traumatic and disorienting. Despite the instability, creativity remained a constant outlet for me.
My professional creative journey began in my early 20s in the world of digital imaging, where I specialized in photo restoration for various photography studios and labs. That experience naturally evolved into graphic design and web graphics, which eventually opened the door to the independent film scene.
In the past two years, I’ve been drawn back to fine art—putting paint to canvas and discovering a powerful, emotional release through the process. Each piece has become a reflection of personal experience, allowing a stream of life’s emotions to flow freely onto the canvas.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My creative process has allowed me an outlet to my life challenges and struggles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Many of my works explore themes of mental and spiritual health, although often embodied through the female form, they capture human emotion in a way that transcends gender and time, creating pieces that speak to universal experiences. My art has been exhibited, collected, and recognized within the Wilmington, NC art community, including a solo exhibition at Ace’s Gallery. My work has also been featured at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery, the Wilmington Art Association’s Spring Art Show, Gallery Citrine, and the 25th Annual Landfall Foundation Art Show & Sale. My diptych piece, “Introvert Extrovert” is set to be published by DK, ‘Psych A History of Psychology’ August 2026, internationally in many languages in both print and digital editions.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve been blessed along the way to have many teachers in life. My mother and brother, both professional artists, have played a huge role in encouraging me to enjoy the creative process.
