Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ahmed White.
Hi Dr. Ahmed, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Rock Academy of Nashville, a 501©3 organization, was founded by Dr. Ahmed White in July 2023. As a proposed FREE public Opportunity Charter School, The Rock Academy embodies a vision where every young person can shape their own future. The mission of The Rock Academy is to re-engage disconnected youth, ensuring they succeed in the post-secondary pathway of their choice.
“We love you, we believe in you, and there is absolutely, positively nothing you can do about it.”
As a novice classroom teacher, Dr. Ahmed White unknowingly began the story of The Rock Academy. His premise was simple: in order to prepare students to learn, we must first meet their personal needs. He taught lessons on hygiene, cut hair, and was intentional about becoming part of his students’ world. This was essential to understanding and supporting them—especially if he hoped to teach them math and science.
Fueled by this philosophy, Dr. White has spent his career advocating for educational equity and pursuing innovative solutions to create a more level playing field for underserved populations—proving what’s possible.
So, when legislation passed in May 2024 creating a pathway for “Opportunity” charter schools, he knew it was time to step out with the same courage he instilled in his students—and bring that 20-year premise to life on a larger scale, nurturing rising ninth graders into their futures.
The Rock Academy will be a first-of-its-kind Opportunity Public Charter School in Tennessee, created specifically to serve at-risk students in grades 9–12, with a focus on youth who have been chronically absent from school and/or involved in foster care. The school design team, carefully curated by Dr. White, has spent their careers—including hundreds of hours over the past two years—researching and codifying how best to support Opportunity Youth in Nashville. These young people need—and deserve—something different, and they need it now.
At The Rock Academy, we believe we can stop the dropout pipeline through robust and personalized support. We have the power to build a community that supports, celebrates, and creates emotional and physical safety for all students. We have an opportunity to give parents a real choice—especially those who have historically had none. Most importantly, we have the opportunity to re-engage Nashville’s Opportunity Youth and lead them toward a future they deserve.
At The Rock Academy, we believe we can change lives because we have the power to build a community to support, celebrate, and create emotional and physical safety for all students. We have an opportunity to give parent choice to a group of families that have literally had no choice until now. We have the opportunity to re-engage Nashville’s Opportunity Youth and lead them to a future of their dreams.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Launching The Rock Academy has not come without significant challenges—many of which highlight why this school is so urgently needed. One of the greatest obstacles we’ve faced is a fundamental lack of understanding around what an Opportunity Public Charter School truly is. Because this model is new to Tennessee, there are no local examples to reference, no existing framework to measure success, and limited awareness from both the public and key stakeholders. We are building something entirely new—and that comes with the burden of having to educate, advocate, and innovate all at once.
In addition, the political landscape surrounding public charter schools has been complex. The tension between traditional public education and charter innovation often creates resistance, even when missions align. Our model is sometimes misunderstood or mischaracterized, adding additional layers of explanation and justification in nearly every conversation.
Recruiting students has also presented challenges. The very demographics we aim to serve—youth who have been chronically absent, involved in foster care, or deeply disconnected from school—are often the hardest to reach. These families have had limited exposure to school choice and understandably carry skepticism or trauma from past educational experiences. Building trust takes time, consistency, and deep community presence.
From a financial standpoint, the model we are developing is inherently more expensive. We’re not just opening another school—we are attempting to transform the trajectory of education for youth who have been historically marginalized. This means offering more flexible scheduling, trauma-informed supports, culturally responsive curriculum, and wraparound services that foster belonging, relevance, and healing. The existing public school funding structures are not built for this level of personalization or intensity.
Despite these obstacles, our resolve remains unshaken. These very challenges are proof of how necessary The Rock Academy is—for the students who have been left behind, for the families who have had no choices, and for a system that must evolve to serve all learners, not just the traditionally successful ones.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an executive director and educational leader, Dr. White holds a relentless commitment to growth and a deep belief in the potential of every individual within a community. Throughout his career, he has been inspired and driven to work with some of the most vulnerable student populations. His “secret sauce” has always been the pairing of high expectations with individualized care—empowering students to achieve success they often believed was out of reach. Dr. White has taken on some of the toughest challenges in education and turned them into success stories.
One of his proudest accomplishments was transforming a failing charter school in Middle Tennessee, on the verge of closure, into a Reward School—an honor given to schools performing in the top 5% statewide for academic achievement or growth. Under his leadership, the school improved from a Level 1—the lowest performance distinction—to a Level 5—the highest performance distinction. This achievement reflects his ability to inspire teams, implement effective strategies, and create environments where both students and staff can thrive. He is especially proud of launching GED and ESL classes for parents and community members, creating opportunities for lifelong learning and deeper family engagement in education.
Over the course of his leadership career, Dr. White has led three schools and the education department of a children’s home, two of which served predominantly underserved communities. For example, one school served a student population that was 95% BIPOC, 80% economically disadvantaged, and 100% eligible for free and reduced meals. In each of these roles, he has been a relentless advocate for equitable opportunities—ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to a high-quality education and the support needed to thrive. These experiences have deeply informed his commitment to making The Rock Academy a choice school where diverse learners feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
A Renewed Hope and Readiness for What Lies Ahead
In spite of the many challenges we face, there is an overwhelming sense of excitement and purpose as we prepare to launch The Rock Academy. The journey has not only revealed the depth of need for this work—it has also illuminated the extraordinary potential of what’s possible when a community comes together to support Opportunity Youth in a meaningful way.
We are beginning to see success. Our model is drawing interest, our message is resonating, and momentum is building. What once felt uncertain is now becoming a source of hope—not just for our team, but for families, partners, and community leaders who see the vision and are rallying behind it. This growing support has raised awareness, affirmed our mission, and given our team a renewed sense of belief in the future of our students.
I am deeply encouraged and fully ready for what lies ahead. The road may not be easy, but it is absolutely worth it—for the youth we serve, the futures they deserve, and the impact we are determined to make.
