Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Garrett.
Hi Evan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In July of 2020, I got in a car accident that left me disabled and having to rehab back to full health. During that rehab, I wasn’t allowed to do much other than sitting around and watching TV or looking at my phone, given that my physical activity was limited. I had played guitar when I was younger but had let it go as other interests and responsibilities became more prevalent.
I ordered a guitar during my rehab and started playing for hours a day. Eventually, I started writing my own music. Songwriting became such a strong outlet for me to express my emotions. After about 6 months of rehabbing, I was able to recover back to where I could resume a very normal life with the exception of a few activities, and so I started a new job and continued to play and write music.
I had the original goal of putting out an EP in 2021, but every time I thought I had a set tracklist I would write a song that I wanted on it. So at this point, I’m now finishing up an album that should be released later this year. In the meantime, I have released some singles, including my song “Holding Space” which was written in partnership with a nonprofit for their first-ever member retreat and to raise money for their community.
I also wrote a Christmas song about a week before Christmas so that was a rush to produce and get that song out in time. But my first ever single, “I’m still here” really reflects on everything I’ve been through in 2020, and also I feel like a lot of people can relate to it because the pandemic was rough for everyone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have grown a great appreciation for music producers because it is such a skill and so many things that I have had to learn and am still learning.
Getting a song from just writing it to a final produced version takes a lot of work. While I have about 18 songs written, only about a third of them are ready for release.
I’ve definitely had to manage my own expectations to make sure that I’m happy with what I produce. It’s been quite the process, but I’ve enjoyed all of it and I’m so proud of myself for sticking to it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a country music artist that is pretty much self-taught. I hope to eventually launch my own label or management company and find up-and-coming artists one day.
I know it’s so difficult to learn everything and do it yourself, so if I can one day help others achieve what I hope too that would be fulfilling.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I learned a lot from YouTube videos as I was starting out.
I use the app Ultimate Guitar tabs. It’s been great for writing my music and also a great community to collaborate with.
I’ve also been fortunate that I have had some friends with contacts or experience in the music industry that have been kind enough to share some insights with me as to how to grow my brand as an artist.
