Today we’d like to introduce you to frau.
Hi frau, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
By the time I was 5, my mom was taking me to vocal sessions doing BGVs for Kidz Bop and various other “kids ensemble” types of work. My dad was a guitar teacher, teaching me to play my first instrument. The two of them really supported and nurtured my desire to grow in music and as an artist.
For a while, I went by my birthname (first and middle) spelled phonetically. Sometime in 2017, I started going by the moniker frau to maintain some anonymity between my personal identity and my artistic identity. At the time I was doing a lot of deep dives with my grandmother on our family history. As it turned out, half of my identity was from Germany, and relocated to America. frau was birthed by inspiration from the stories she shared with me.
Since then, I’ve been playing shows, working with other artists, and releasing music myself. I just released a music video for “mother” on February 24th. It’s my proudest public work, the song is really important to me!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mostly yes! I feel so supported and encouraged by friends, family, collaborators, and the small fan base I have! I am still growing, I’m still learning, and building community.
I am confident in the quality of my productions, performances, and work. I think the biggest challenge has been affording to make ends meet AND pursue music. Where I am in my path in artistry, I am practically working 2 full-time jobs – one chasing the dream, the other chasing the paycheck.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Electronic Pop artist. I write, produce, record, and curate my work. Along the way, I have developed relationships with friends who see what I see in the project and have volunteered their talents to this project as well. Grateful doesn’t come close to describing how I feel about these people entering my life in such a unique way.
Though being a performing artist is my focus and passion, I am other things as well – I am a director, stylist, make-up artist, a model, illustrator, mom to two cats, a friend, partner, daughter, and 26 y/o woman with a clear vision for my future.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Nashville still feels like home to me. I love the music, and the community – there is a general kindness about this city I have yet to experience elsewhere. I appreciate how small it really is in comparison to other cities, and how close it is to State parks. The accessibility to nature within 30 minutes of being downtown is really special, I miss that the most I think.
I grew up in Nashville, and I’ve seen it change a LOT over the past decade (and I know I can get an “amen” from most other natives on this one).
The culture has shifted significantly – there seems to be less diversity and a theme of pushing those who’ve been here for decades out of their homes to make room for those who can pay higher rent. The music scene isn’t what it was, with historic venues like Exit/In and Cannery closing, it just feels as though local music is also being pushed out of their homes. By the time I moved, I was ready to move on. I miss the way it used to be, but I’m grateful there is still so much to come back to when I visit.
