Check Out Gary Shoulders’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Shoulders.

Hi Gary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you, for taking the time to read more about me. I’m currently working as part of two small startup businesses in Tennessee, as we’re driving our own production company in the music and film industry. We also assist in economic development from Linden, TN to Nashville, TN. Our slogan is: “We Design This, That, or IT.”, but beyond the slogan.

We’re a design company that started in my guest bedroom in 2018. Today, our clients are growing rapidly and more recently finishing a set of projects surrounding new artists, marketing, audio and video productions, product development, digital marketing, product placement, design, management, and delivery. Our companies focus on products and capabilities that are designed to positively impact the state of Tennessee and beyond.

I grew up in the music industry with some of the most amazing experiences. I studied under Bobby Jean Frost in High School at Hillsboro High in Green Hills, Nashville. I performed in the Hillsboro Sophisticats nationally, at the Grand Ole Opry on the radio. Additionally, I performed on the General Jackson showboat, and Opry Land while it was open. I’ve been lucky to have grown up in the music world, as well as my family are country music stars. Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings, Struggle Jennings, Jenny Jennings, Brianna Harness, and Caitlyn Curtis.

I’ve spent the last 15 years working with some of the largest information technology companies, such as; Capgemini, Cummins, Siemens, TCS/TATA, and Federal Home Loan Banks, and now, I run my own start-ups NASGI, Inc, and Shoulders Production. I look forward to chatting more.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it’s been a challenge in all aspects. I started school late in life as I lost my father, grandmother, and brothers all in an accident. So, college was hard as I started in 2003 and graduated in 2007 from Indiana University. I’ve worked hard in the ever-changing Information Technology field to simply do what I could, and deliver all that I promised.

Many times, that required me to take classes or to read up to be at the level needed to deliver with my teams. In 2021, I started working back in the music/video industry and that has had its up and downs playing catch up with the industry and getting used to being back in the Nashville, Tennessee area. It takes time and money to get the company off the ground, but we’re making it happen one day at a time. The economic challenges around us has made me prepare for plans B, C, and D, but more importantly, failure isn’t an option.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’d say that I’m an artist first, as I’ve always leaned on my creative side even in information technology. I’ve been, and will continue, to work with companies as a consultant, but also run my start-ups.

I’m also working with my family in the studios and see a few musical releases on the horizon. Art is sewn into everything I am and do. I’m an artist, Tennessean, born and raised, and that will never change.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’ve seen the bad, good, and ugly of life. “It’s not what happens to us, but how we respond that defines who and what we will become”.

I think most people see me one way and that it’s all flowers and rainbows, but I’ve honestly had my set of bad days and I didn’t let them get me down. I think my life is evidence that if you just keep on keeping on, and have faith in God, it will work out as it is meant to be.
