Check Out Genevieve Skittone’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genevieve Skittone.

Genevieve Skittone

Genevieve, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been involved in music. I started taking voice lessons really little and took part in choir and theatre. For a while, when I dreamed of being a singer I thought maybe I’d have to hire ghost writers because I had no idea how to write any music. In 8th grade though, we had a poetry unit in school and I loved it. I started writing poems all the time for fun and realized if I could just figure out how to write melodys I could have a song. I was also really into Katy Perry at the time and she became my biggest inspiration for how I would songwrite. The first good song I ever wrote was called “100%” and I still have it up on my Instagram page. Throughout high school, I continued working on my craft and building my skills. My junior year, I started working with other local artists who had the same dreams as me and I felt like I found a community within this goal.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth. The music industry can be extremely confusing and expensive. And without a big break, you are just constantly trying to figure things out. One of my favorite type of films to watch are documentaries of music artists, but those only tell so much of their stories. So I’ve spent years trying to just piece together how to get from point A: I have this dream of making this a career to Point Z: I’m a successful music artist. I wish I could be in the studio every day recording music and playing shows every night but until it’s a full-time job, I can’t invest a majority of my income into this business until my bills are paid off each month. And when I’m making max 2,500 a month, it’s really hard to prioritize the quality of what I put out.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a pop artist, song-writer, and producer. My most popular song is called never-mind. and has over 30k streams on Spotify. The song I’m most proud of though is Better in Bed. I feel that song encompasses what I want my music to sound like the best. I think something that sets me apart is my lyrics. I don’t really hold back or try to censor what I mean. And I try to make each song about something genuinely different. A lot of artists have a topic they write about the most. Some is love, some is mental health, some is partying. I want my collection of songs to all tell a different story of life.

What matters most to you? Why?
My happiness and finding a community that connects with me emotionally has always been the most important thing to me and I feel like that really does come out with the decisions I make revolving my music. I would do a lot of things differently if I cared about let’s say the money more or just fast growth.
