Check Out Gerald Gattis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald Gattis.

Hi gerald, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Mine has been a long road. I grew up in the country in the ’80s, with an active imagination and an inability to concentrate on anything that didn’t immediately interest me. I discovered Dungeons and Dragons when my sister brought it home from college when I was 12. I was immediately taken by the playground of imagination that the game is. Soon I made friends in school who shared my interest and we found our way into other tabletop role-playing games, like vampire and Shadowrun. Much time and many jobs passed, and I was not able to stay employed anywhere for very long due to my attention span. I worked everything from construction to office jobs, to little satisfaction and no raises. More time passed, covid hit, and I saw that people were playing Dungeons & Dragons online. After a little research I found that people were paying dungeon Masters to run games for them. A mountain of work and 3 years later I’m a successful professional dungeon master who runs several campaigns per week and has ran two live streamed campaigns!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It is not been a smooth road, nor a linear one. I’ve had many jobs throughout the years, and have been able to excel at none of them. I’ve gone through years of doubt before I found my current occupation. Building up my clientele took a year and a half, in which I made very little money from the side jobs. It was rough on my relationships but the people in my life stuck with me, thankfully.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for creating immersive worlds, long-term games that last a few years, and in particular for my map making and voice acting! But I think what truly sets me apart is my focus on bringing individual players in to a group dynamic. My psychology background probably helps with that!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that I have a background in medieval combat, combat sports, and martial arts. This helps me maintain good pacing and offer visceral descriptions during combat!
