Today we’d like to introduce you to Gus Johnson.
Hi Gus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’m the lead singer of a band called Low Gap. Low Gap is a country band started in Holmes County, Ohio that has expanded all the way to Nashville. Low Gap has recently recorded with producer Chris Latham. I started playing guitar when I was 8. I wrote my first song by 13. Here I am with the opportunity to record with some of the greatest musicians in Nashville. I am incredibly grateful and excited for what the future has to hold.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth… but it hasn’t been too rough either. My parents and community were very supportive of my dreams from the start. I’ve worked hard at my craft and that’s helped me out a lot. The toughest thing for me has definitely been marketing. Booking shows and festivals as well as marketing our music has proven to be a challenge. We’re independent and marketing on a low budget is not easy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m the lead singer and songwriter of the Band Low Gap. Consisting of my brother Phin, and I, Low Gap is a country/Americana duo that is new to the industry. Started in 2020, just before Covid hit, Low Gap has gone from a small hometown group to recording with a Grammy-winning producer in Nashville. We craft smart songs that aim to move people through smart lyrics and catchy tunes. We’re proud of how far we have come as a pair of guys who are still in high school. We’ve gotten a lot more attention than we ever anticipated. I think that we are young, incredibly hard-working, likable, and talented. It takes a lot to succeed in Nashville and the only thing we are really missing at this point is the connections, and we feel like with our position and talent, that will come with time and hard work.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is defined by the individual. If success is starting a family to you, and you do that, you are successful. If it’s being rich, and you do that, you are successful. Success isn’t all about money or popularity. Success is about doing what you love and making a difference doing it. Low Gap wants to be the next big thing, don’t get me wrong, but if we never are anything more than we are now, my life will not be defined by that one shortcoming. It would be defined by the lives I’ve impacted and the positive things I’ve done.
