Today, we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Velasquez.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Isaac Velasquez, a Venezuelan native and self-taught drummer. I have been playing drums professionally for the past 18 years. I come from a well-respected family of musicians, and I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps as he also is a drummer. I lived in Miami, Florida, for fifteen years, where I had the opportunity to develop my craft by working with amazing artists and musicians and touring all around the US.
In 2018, I decided I wanted to pursue different goals. I had heard for a while Nashville was the place to be, and in a matter of a few months, my family and I made the move to Nashville. I did not really know anybody in town, but I felt that it was the right move. I met Justine Blazer, who is a wonderful singer and producer, within my first month in town, and I started working steadily with her right away. I have been very fortunate to work live with wonderful artists such as Wendy Moten and Denny Jiosa, among others, as well as work with very talented musicians in the studio.
I have also been consistently working around town for the past five years, which has been a great mix of country, Latin, rock, and jazz music. At the end of 2022, I participated in the music competition reality show Banded as a contestant. I was the drummer for the band Gamblers in The Neon, where Four out of our six original tunes were selected to be recorded in the studio. I have projects in the works for this year for which I am very excited, and I cannot wait to see what the future will bring.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
At first, it felt a little overwhelming since I had to learn a whole new repertoire, and what took me a little bit longer to get used to was the Nashville number system. Thanks to a few patient and helpful friends, I was able to get comfortable fairly quickly.
Thanks for sharing that. What sets you apart from others?
Self-taught drummer.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I grew up in a family of professional musicians, and from an early age, I was able to see the way professionals approached different scenarios. Also, I think my Latino background and living in Miami allowed me to learn many music genres, which has been very helpful over the years.
How do you think about luck?
It goes back to that famous phrase. The more I work, the luckier I get.
