Check Out Jay Ammo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Ammo.

Hi Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
M name is Jay Ammo, I was born and raised in a country in South America called Guyana. I migrated to the U.S back in 2016, where I lived in New Jersey. In April of 2017 I upped and Joined the U.S Army where I was stationed at Fort Drum NY, then after my first Afghanistan deployment, my new Duty station because forth Campbell. As far as music goes I’ve been playing since I was 14 years of age in my Old country did a fair number of shows so I came here to continue my dream of becoming a great musician/artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up with family and friends has its good and bad days. My family has a trend of sticking together and following each other’s footsteps and music as a lifelong career doesn’t necessarily fit into that trend it was more so considered as a hobby. So I know then I’d have to make it work out for myself if I wanted to do music the way I envision it for myself. It’s been hard yes because music is one of the hardest industries to get into but that doesn’t stop the work I put into getting there. Nevertheless, my biggest challenge is my own mind.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a Sergeant in the U.S Army my job as a Squad leader is to train my Soldier give advice and assist them in whatever they lack or need help in. As we are Infantry Mortar men, meaning we provide indirect fire from a location at a high angle to destroy or suppress the enemy so that our front line Soldiers can get the job done.
I’m proud of the fact that I get the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself and I have the pleasure of training others to take up my position one day. I’ll accept any challenge even if the other guys bigger than me and I will always outwork myself till I absolutely can anymore just to keep going in any event. I take pride in making my Soldiers the best so that when that time comes they will always be ready.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?

Singing in front of a crew for the first time at my church. Something that I’ve never done before I was probably 13 then I’m 27 now. It was for a church Christmas concert and being the guy that I am I would never talk or say a word if someone asked. I was watching a movie called this Christmas, the one with Chris Brown when he sang in chat the end. I used my Dad’s old camera and recorded a video from the TV every time they played it and practice in the shower for hours using up all the water. Finally, I got the song down, keep in mind my family doesn’t know that I sing. I made a bet with them that I’ll do a solo song for this year’s concert and of course, they laughed and asked me to sing in front of them but I couldn’t. On the day of the concert, my teacher all excited that I’m doing this asked me if I was ready to go up and sing I said no cause my stage fright kicked it 2 days early, so she ran up to the MC and he MC said “I have someone else who wants to sing, can that young lady please come up to the stage” in my head I was embarrassed, how can I walk on stage after she said that? So I got up the place was super quiet you could hear every single step I took and everyone was watching me wondering what I was doing. Then I got up on stage my hand were shaving so bad and ice cold. I closed my eyes and just let go and started singing then everyone went crazy in shock cause of how I sounded. So if it wasn’t for my teacher going again my will I wouldn’t of had the passion for music like I do today and that’s my favorite childhood memory.
