Check Out Jenny Newman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Newman.

Jenny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Nashville, TN. When I was a junior in high school, my best friend Whitney was killed in a DUI crash. Shortly afterward, I became involved with MADD along with her parents.

MADD received a state-wide grant to combat underage drinking and hired me to help establish the program. I spent the next 7 years there and learned so much! I spent another 10 years in the non-profit sector, mostly in fundraising and development, for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and The Nashville State Community College Foundation.

In 2013, I was looking for a complete career change. My husband and I owned rental property, and I always had an interest in real estate. He encouraged me to pursue a career as a Realtor. It was the best decision I have ever made! I was able to use the skills that I had learned and continue my passion for helping others.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the challenges that I faced, was being shy and an introvert. MADD helped me find my voice. Through training and the guidance of others, I became more confident. This was a game changer for me in my future career.

Another challenge that I faced, was when I first started real estate. After a lot of research and meeting with friends who were already in the business, I discovered that 90% of new agents are out of the business within 5 years. I knew that the odds were against me but received some valuable advice from those friends. The first piece of advice was to find a full-service brokerage that offered training and guidance. I found that with Crye-Leike Green Hills. The next was to find a great mentor. A top realtor in my office with over 20 years of experience agreed to mentor me. I worked side by side with her for the first two years. The hands-on experience and knowledge were invaluable.

It’s also challenging to be a native and Realtor in the “It” city! I love this city and know why it’s so special. Change while trying to maintain what makes Nashville special is a hard balance. I try to do my part by serving on the Government Affairs and Affordable Housing Committees at Greater Nashville Realtors Association. We champion home ownership through policy-making and collaborating with other partners to help solve these problems.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Residential real estate and new construction in Nashville and surrounding counties. Buying and/or selling a home can seem like a daunting task, especially in our “Hot” market. Whether it’s their first time or I’m helping them with their 20th investment property, my goal is to assist my clients in making a confident decision.

Knowledge is power, so I spend a lot of time educating myself about different topics to help better serve them. My clients put a lot of trust in me to guide them through the process of one of the biggest investments that they will ever make. I don’t take that lightly. Communication and honesty are key, especially when negotiating these purchases. My familiarity with the area and market are invaluable when helping me find the perfect home. Sometimes, I’m their unofficial ambassador of the city, helping them discover where they fit in.

I want to earn the role of their realtor for life. I am someone that they can call with any questions about owning/maintaining a home to where to take visitors for the Nashville experience. I’ve been lucky to help some wonderful people make their homes here in Middle Tennessee.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
My advice for someone just starting out in real estate would be to find a brokerage with great agent training and support. Interview multiple companies, until you find the right fit for you!

Find someone, whose business you admire, and ask them questions. Be teachable and learn as much as you can from those who excel in the industry. The industry and market are always changing, so always be learning. Real estate is such a rewarding career!
