Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Jensen.
Hi Jillian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2012 I made my “television debut” (so to speak) on season 2 of The X Factor where I was blessed to sing alongside some other incredible talents from all over the country and landed myself in the Top 24. Oddly enough, my audition resurfaced the internet back in April 2020 and has gathered 236 million views. Which is crazy to think that 9 years later people are still watching little 19-year-old me. Our judges that season were: Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, LA Reid, and Simon Cowell.
After X Factor, I found myself still wanting another shot and proceeded to compete on American Idol where I got to the Top 15 women in the competition. The song that got me into my final phase before being cut the following week was an original song entitled “In Your Arms”.
Both experiences were unique in their own right and showed different parts of myself as a human and as an artist.
After the shows I traveled the world performing as well as appearing at schools as a motivational speaker on behalf of AntiBullying, self-harm, eating disordered, depression and other very personal topics.
In 2016 I rebranded and went under the name Amber Eyes, which was an incredible experience. I had quickly gotten contacted by Glamour Magazine to watch Katy Perry react to a cover my friend and fellow Idol Alum, Brielle Von Hugel, and I had done of one of her songs. And shortly after I went out on tour with Postmodern Jukebox following a cover, I did with them of Halsey’s “Bad At Love” for their YouTube channel.
When I started my country band in September 2018, the band took on the name Amber Eyes, with me going back to my birth name (haha). Before even releasing our debut album we received the opportunity to open for Old Dominion, Jordan Davis, and Mitchell Tenpenny. It is something I will never forget, thanks to Old Dominion’s lead singer Matthew Ramsey.
In September 2019, our debut album final released and landed number 69 on the Top 100 Country Charts. We proceeded to go on tour just before the pandemic hit in January/February of 2020 and ended our tour at Puckett’s in Leiper’s Fork. We are so excited to be returning there January 26th, 2022.
2022 will be the year of LOTS of new music to be released by both my band Amber Eyes and myself as a solo artist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had plenty of struggles along my road from being (for lack of better words) screwed over to my own personal demons, but I believe every road needs these bumps to appreciate the clearing at the end of it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a singer-songwriter, I feel that the moments I am most fond of/proud of are when I receive messages or meet someone in person that lets me know my music has helped them in one way or another. There is nothing like writing something that is so very personal to YOU and thinking you yourself are alone and then realizing there are so many others that you connect with. It a beautiful thing being able to take someone on a complete journey through songwriting. It is my greatest therapy.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to always be open and ready for anything that may come your way.
