Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph “Joe” Daccache.
Hi Joseph, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I studied songwriting and Music Business at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. After spending five years there developing a solid foundation through networking, doing in-person sessions with other artists/writers, and booking live shows, I decided to move to Los Angeles. This year I had the opportunity to do a tour starting in LA going all the way to NYC, and through an amazing songwriter organization called SongWriteClub, I had my first major-label cut with the band Durand Jones and The Indications.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just as most artists, I faced my fair share of struggles in this industry. There have been many doors shut in my face, and plenty of doors that cracked open for only a moment until they too ended up being closed. I looked at every closed door not as a missed opportunity, but as an opportunity that was not meant for me but for another talented artist. Having that perspective allowed me to build resilience by acknowledging the wins I received (no matter how big or small) and celebrating my peers’ success along the way. The hardest part in my journey so far though was coming out as gay. It was a struggle allowing myself to tell my tell the real side of my stories and to speak honestly and unapologetically, because for 22 years I had kept that part of my life hidden, many times even from myself. I’m so blessed to have been surrounded by an amazing community of people who helped me celebrate the authenticity in the songs. I would not be here today if not for the support of all the listeners who helped me see that my art is worthy of being heard and celebrated as a gay man just as much as it was when I was closeted.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a songwriter in various genres, but I specialize in pop and R&B and am also an artist. This year I’m really excited about having had 4 of my songs used in an Austrian, LGBT Short Film coming out in 2022 (Who We Are). I’m proud to be a part of a project that is helping to lift LGBT voices.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I share my raw and personal experiences using a mix of R&B, pop and gospel music influences. I have a story that is my own and no one else’s, nobody can tell the story of my pain, my joy, my struggles or burdens but me.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
A piece of advice I wish I was given when I was first starting out is to trust your intuition. If you center yourself and become intentional with the decisions you make for your business, you will find that more often than not, you have the answer. It’s alright to ask questions and to learn from others’ experiences; take all of the advice into consideration but if you have a clear vision, trust it with your whole heart and don’t let anyone else steer the wheel of your vehicle. Building a team of people to help you in carrying out your vision is important, but be intentional with who you let enter your business. Surround yourself with people who you trust and who trust you. However, if you find yourself struggling to find a team, become that team yourself. If you need a manager, publisher, social media strategist or what have you, be those people. Take the time to learn and understand all aspects of your business (even the not so fun parts), because at the end of the day, nobody will work harder for your business, your goals and your success than you.
