Today we’d like to introduce you to Journee Vvanderlust.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in wedding photography 11 years ago when my middle child was born. It started out as a hobby and I didn’t originally intend to enter the wedding industry. The first few weddings I captured and I was completely hooked! Call it an obsession if you will, but weddings are ultimately my favorite thing to capture. I cry happy tears at every single one and celebrate the love and union of each couple just as much as their close family and friends. Over the years I had maintained capturing weddings as just a part-time gig.
I booked some of my own and worked a lot with other studios and bigger photographers in the industry. I took on a lot of workshops and majored in digital media in college to help expand my knowledge and learn new skills. When covid happened it put a 2-year halt on my photography. I didn’t book any weddings, except for one family friend, and just waited for everything to get back to normal. Kicking off 2022 I decided to go all in head first and make Photography and Videography my FULL-TIME career.
I joined up with an amazing group under Alexander Ma, called Wedding Filmmaker Mastery. I now network with over 200 other professional photographers and videographers in this amazing community and we all travel worldwide working together, doing workshops, and weekly mentorship calls. It has been a career and life-changing. I am so excited today to say that wedding photography and videography are not only just a passion of mine but my amazing full-time career.
Traveling the world, meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, and capturing some of the most cherished moments for families as they start their new journey together. It brings my heart so much joy and my life so much adventure, happiness, and content feelings. I celebrate my career every single day and feel like I am living a dream come true.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This industry is not for the faint of heart. It is absolutely challenging, exhausting, frustrating, difficult, and soo much competition. You hear no thankyou more than you hear yes. Covid cancellations put a HUGE damper on finances and events and it was a major struggle for so many.
2022 is still seeing some postponements, restrictions, and cancellations. Some couples are opting for small elopements instead of full parties, and others are going all out with the biggest party ever after having been locked down and told no for 2 years.
Keeping up with the Joneses, always having to learn new tricks, upgrade to the new equipment, and stay up to date on the newest trends. You can’t fall into a routine. Each couple is unique and you have to make sure to not keep being repetitive. It’s challenging, but rewarding nonetheless.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding photography and videography. Traveling nationwide (and even worldwide) to capture weddings and special events. I believe first and foremost my passion for the industry and my love and appreciation for weddings and unity set me above all else. I am the major hype girl.
A jack of all trades. I love weddings so much that I base nearly all of my hobbies on them. From crafting, baking, digital media, and web design, and even became an ordained minister and licensed travel agent. I’m always looking for things to add to help my couples get the most out of their day.
I’m always the person willing to go above and beyond and I enjoy every second of it.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
I am my toughest critic. Always learning and looking for ways to improve. So validation matters A LOT to me. I love getting feedback, and when I don’t I’m always stressed and worried that maybe it wasn’t good enough. So that makes me a perfectionist with major creative OCD.
It also means I take my time to make sure it’s right and to the best of my abilities. Make sure each couple is more than happy, I want them to be ecstatic about their photos and videos, and I want to make sure they have these amazing moments to look back on and share for a lifetime.
It is so important to me to capture the most important moments from their big day.
