Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken West.
Hi Ken, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a kid, in search of his purpose in life. My oldest brother got me started on my journey, by teaching me how to draw. I was 9 years old when I started learning from him. Over the years, I’ve been motivated by different people and things in life that kept me going, because honestly if it was up to me, I would’ve stopped drawing years ago.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road, doing what I do? That’s a great question and the answer is very simple….absolutely not! Lol. It was a rough road from the beginning, with starting to learn how to do something new that you’ve never done before, at such a young age, is kind of stressful. Watching tutorial videos on YouTube, to learn new skills in Art, is definitely frustrating but it’s worth the time and patience, to me it is anyway because this is what I love to do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in graphite pencil art! That’s a new top favorite of mine. Most people know me for my creative mind when it comes to drawing portraits. I will draw a picture from a reference photo and say that I’m done with it, but, then my mind goes to work and I create this unique foreground or background or both, that matches the theme of the drawing to make the drawing stand out more.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy kid, always quiet, always thinking about the next move. I was never really a people-person until I started stepping out of that shell, when I realized that if I wanted to show my art skills off to the world, then I would have to communicate with the public more, because requests were coming through to draw things for people. I’m in my late 30s now and I still sometimes get a little shy talking to new people, but once I open up to them and they finally meet Ken West, instead of Kenyada West, then it’s a whole different story because Ken is very sarcastic, but like I said, I’m only kind of shy around new people, so it’ll take a minute to open up, depending on the situation.
