Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyndsie Lord.
Hi Lyndsie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my story!
My journey as a Photographer and Makeup Artist has been a bit of a whirlwind, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! When people ask me how I got into photography I always have to credit my parents, my dad always had a camera and was always taking pictures and my mom would be the one to put together the photo albums.
When I was little, one of my favorite things to do was look through those photo albums, I loved looking at all the memories, and there was just something about older film photos that was so special. I really feel like this is where my love for photography began!
As far as makeup goes, my mom was a hairdresser and growing up, I would always watch her do her makeup and I found myself playing with whatever she let me use. Flash forward to high school and I was one of all my friends who would do everyone’s makeup for school dances, proms, and birthdays. It’s just something that came so naturally to me and I loved doing it!
During this time there was an infamous show on TV called America’s Next Top Model that I was obsessed with – not for the modeling aspect like most people watched, but for the makeup and photography side of the show. I was enamored with the process of the makeup artists and the photographers and how combining the two created a gorgeous final piece of art. I remember thinking ” THAT is what I want to do” and it just clicked.
I went to Art school in Boston and worked at any makeup store I could, and waitressed part-time. I worked at Sephora and Bare Minerals for a total of 5 years and feel like this is really where I began learning the ins and outs of makeup. Around this time is when I started getting asked to do makeup for weddings and events, and a handful of my friends were getting married and needed a photographer.
So, one day I just decided to put it out there on there I was booking weddings for makeup and photography – just to see what would happen – and I ended up booking 7 weddings within the first three months. I was honestly kind of blown away with the response, but just felt like this is exactly where I was meant to be.
I’ve been photographing and doing makeup for weddings ever since. I officially started my business in 2017 in Vermont and grew from there for about 2 years.
Vermont is such a stunning place and I am beyond grateful for the growth that it provided me and my business. I had big dreams and wanted to continue growing and expanding my business so I decided to make the move to Nashville at the end of 2018!
For two years I have traveled back and forth between New England and Nashville for weddings, and still, maintain a clientele base in Vermont – but have recently started expanding my roots here in Nashville!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the biggest struggle was navigating and learning how to be an entrepreneur in general.
Nobody really teaches you how to do it, or prepares you for the mental ups and downs you go through in running your own business. You wear ALL of the hats, and if you’re not working, the work isn’t getting done. So, learning how to manage that aspect of the business, all while remembering to take a break and take time for yourself was a process of finding a good balance.
With my business, constant traveling can be a bit challenging. I offer services not only in Nashville or New England but anywhere couples/clients want to book me – so traveling is a big part of it.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it! It’s arguably one of the best perks of being able to photograph/ do makeup anywhere, but I’ve had my fair share of delayed or canceled flights, having to navigate traveling during a global pandemic, or bringing home for one night and then gone for another 10.
These are all things that you can’t really prepare for when you jump into entrepreneurship – you just learn to ride the wave, take the experience, and have more insight for next time. At the end of the day though, when you’re truly doing what you love, all the struggles are worth it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Wedding Photographer and Makeup Artist – I specialize in weddings, branding, and boudoir photography as well as bridal/event makeup!
I’d say I’m mostly known for my weddings + boudoir photography and for having a more dark, moody, and warm vibe, I love contrast and playing/manipulating the light within my photographs. Branding photography is a relatively new love I’ve found and I’m just beginning to explore and offer that avenue of photography!
I’m really proud of how far I’ve come, mostly with my skill in this art. I feel like I learn something new every time I shoot and know all of the “rules” of photography but now being able to break them creatively has been a really fun experience.
I think I stand out from others because I have a bit of an “edgier” vibe, and I really like to try and get as creative as possible with every shoot, while still staying true to the couples/clients I’m photographing. I love capturing authentic moments while having an artistic flair for all of my sessions.
I pride myself on making sure my clients are having a great time while I’m shooting too. I like to make sure they feel welcomed and like you’re just hanging out with a friend, it can be intimidating having your photo taken, especially if you’re not a big fan of it, haha.
So, I try to make sure everyone is comfortable and leaves saying “that was fun!”
What are your plans for the future?
I definitely plan on photographing and doing makeup for as long as possible. These are my two loves, so I don’t see a future where those two things are not relevant, but I have a handful of plans and big dreams for the next couple of years!
I’m in the process of finding a studio so I can expand the Boudoir Photography and Makeup side of my business, I’ve been dreaming up this studio for a long time, so I’m excited about that next chapter!
And maybe even one day a wedding venue – but until then, I plan on traveling and capturing as many amazing weddings and meeting amazing couples, as possible!
