Today we’d like to introduce you to Magdalene Rose Rojas
Hi Magdalene Rose, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started playing music when I was 5 years old. My sisters and I started learning piano, but as we got older, we all decided to work on different instruments and started a band together. At first, we were just a cover band, playing at school talent shows and open mic nights, but by the time I was 11, we started writing our own original songs and had started playing actual shows at venues. Our band was a Christian rock band called GFM, and it was made up of me and my two sisters. We moved on to playing regional shows and did our first national tour in 2017 when I was 16. Things kept snowballing from there, and we ended up touring the U.S. several times and made it out to Germany twice. Even though things were still going well, in 2022, we decided to put an indefinite hiatus on GFM. We felt like God was calling us out of the band and into other careers. In 2023, I started to write and perform as a solo artist under my name Magdalene Rose. I started touring in January of 2023 with a band called Seventh Day Slumber, and I released my first solo song in March 2023 called “Shark Spray.” I’ve stayed consistently on the road since then, performing close to 200 shows in 2023 and getting close to that number in 2024 already. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating on a song release with Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath, toured with Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy, and had a #15 song on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Charts. I moved to from Jacksonville, Florida to Nashville in April 2024 because my drummer (Blaise Rojas) and I got married, and he was born and raised in the Nashville area. Bus call is way easer to get to now, and things are just getting bigger and better as we go!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not always. Transitioning from a family band to a solo artist was difficult. I had to learn how to be away from my family, and how to do things on my own. During this transition, I was struggling with night terrors that kept me from sleeping properly for months. I became sleep deprived and paranoid, and it was taking a toll on my health and my relationships. I hadn’t talked to many people about how I was struggling, but then a woman who had become a fan of my music came and spoke to me at one our concerts. She was able to pray over me for protection against demonic oppression, and I immediately stopped having night terrors that night. That was what inspired me to write my song “A Bad Residential,” and it’s been amazing to see how it has helped others who have experienced or are still experiencing night terrors.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I write and perform music that creates a mix of metal and pop music! With rock music being a predominantly male driven industry, it is rare that I meet another female doing music in the style that I do! Our music has screaming vocals as well as singing, and I perform all the vocal parts! I also am a Christian, so I strive to create a place of hope with my music. I want to be able to help people with the music I write, and I always try to speak to as many people as I can at our concerts.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I could not have reached any of my achievements without the help of God. I’ve looked to Him for guidance every step of the way, and He has given me strength in times where it felt like it would be easier to just give up. He’s brought me an incredible tour family to travel with, and their support has been such a necessity. My husband’s family (Seventh Day Slumber) has also brought me in and helped in ways that I wouldn’t have even known to ask haha. I am now signed to Rockfest Records, and they not only believe in Magdalene Rose as a musician, but they believe in me as an individual and that is going to keep me motivated way more than anything else.
