Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Perry.
Hi Malik, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve always seen myself as a model since the age of 7! I remember looking into a catalog and thinking to myself that’s what I want to do. Now it wouldn’t be until 17 that I vocalized my interests. In high school, I mentioned this to any and everyone! I would go outside in the middle of class and take pictures with friends and record myself even if I didn’t have on the most flashy coordinated outfit (the teachers allowed me to of course).
One of my middle school teachers who then transitioned into high school, Gloria Christian, referred me to one of her colleagues Dewayne Richard. He was one of the first photographers who helped me start my portfolio and encouraged me to continue as a male model. But before then, I went to a local casting at tribe talent management, which is who I’m signed with now.
For the first time, they turned me down! Sad I know but at the time I had blue hair and I was extremely nervous I didn’t let my personality show! Within 2021 I went back and tried again and succeeded! Since then I have been gaining many different experiences along the way with photographers’ castings, models, and many other creatives!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any road is considered smooth! So the first time I got signed with tribe around 2018-19 I was working an after-school job while participating in sports at Mcgavock. My primary form of transportation was through metro transit. So to get to school I would be waking up at 4 am to make it to the station at 6 to then get on another bus that would just barely take me on time to school at 7.
After school, I’d have to take the bus after practice to work which would cramp on so much more time. How I was fitting classes from the tribe into my schedule I have no idea. As time progressed I started falling into harder times with my living situation and I had to take a break into modeling with my tribe. I did not let them fully know of my situation only of my pride. I was paying some small bills for mine and the modeling program and I could not handle it all by myself. I did not have the support I have now when I first started.
So because of all this, I took a break with lasted until 2021. By then I graduated from school and life started to settle so I then decided to show my face again. They were apprehensive of course because it was like I was there and then I wasn’t. But after explaining myself I slowly have been proving not only to myself but my agents that this is exactly what I want to do and now I’m here!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a model and actor. I have modeled some commercials for high fashion. I have also done small extra rolls for various commercials. I feel as though I’m quite the hoot just not for the camera. I don’t yet specialize in any art form because there’s always room for improvement. I am however in my element when taking high fashion photos; being able to do fast-motioned poses and fun abstract angles.
Anything that shows my power within stillness. I am most proud of the rapport I am gaining with different photographers and models along with different establishments. I am proud of the feedback I’m getting from my peers on my overall growth and being able to make my visions come into reality and convince others. Being able to feel validated in a space that once was not there is amazing!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I’m usually slightly unlucky so I wouldn’t say luck has played a substantial role in my life and business just yet.
