Today, we’d like to introduce you to Markee Carter.
Hi Markee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
How I started my business, We Legit LLC, in 2021. When fellow rapper Nipsey Hussle passed, he mentioned in one of his interviews how he started his business venture by selling t-shirts, and that’s what gave me the motivation and dedication to get into small business/entrepreneurship. I had the name and the idea but haven’t put it to use. I worked on my craft for a year and a half before getting my LLC.
I did studies, researched, and saved money to buy my equipment little by little until I was fully ready to launch. Since I launched my business, “We Legit Clothing,” I’ve been getting a lot of great compliments and feedback. I surprised a lot of my peers because my company popped out of nowhere, and now things are slowly progressing. It’s all a process. Some days I want to give up and some days I motivate myself to keep going, while getting great advice from my mentors. If you have a passion for something, put it to use. You never know where it will take you.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. When I launched the business, I thought I was gonna make a whole lotta money and have a whole bunch of sales. Turned out to be that wasn’t the truth. I went through the being broke phase.
Then, out of nowhere, I started gaining traction through social media and slowly started getting sales. The struggle I have faced was that a lot of people started a T-shirt/Clothing Company, but to me, it’s not about what others are doing. It’s about what I’m doing and how I want to brand my company.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m in the security field and have loved what I have done for many years. Specializing in communication and crowd control. I currently hold a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. I am known for having a great personality and a great sense of humor, and I can keep you laughing.
My proudest moment was when I graduated college and became the first in my family to gain a degree. What separates me from others is that my roots are thick in Nashville, Tennessee, history. I have learned that my great-grandfather Frederick T. Carter was one of the first black businessmen of Nashville, Tennessee. Which also keeps me going every day.
