Today we’d like to introduce you to Melisa Majdancic
Hi Melisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my degrees in themed entertainment design and business leadership/entrepreneurship. While getting my degrees, I realized my love for helping create memories for people and putting on events. This led me to finding a job in the hospitality industry as an event operations manager. For a year and a half I learned and shadowed as much as I could about how events are put on, what it takes from everyone, and how to create impact in events. I just recently got promoted to being an Event Manager. I am thrilled to learn more about the industry and help curate more exciting events.
In my free time, I love to write about all of my memories and wishes. I have published two books so far, both being poetry books. My first book is called Kinder and walks readers through the transition from being a child to being an adult through the help of color.
My second and most recent release, is called Garden of Memories. This collection goes through the highs, lows, and everything in between when it comes to relationships. In this, the readers are guided through the different stages based on different flowers.
Where I have written some things, I am unsure of the direction of my third book. I am at a completely new stage of my life currently and honestly learning to navigate it and what that means for my writing. But rest assured…something new is on the horizon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I hate to say I don’t think much in life is a smooth road. There was definitely challenges along the way in both my professional career and in my writing career.
I think for me the biggest hurdle I had to face was imposter syndrome. As much as I would love to say it doesn’t impact me or affect me, that would just be a lie. Switching from one industry to another in my professional career, came with much fear of “what do I actually know” and “how do I lead a team if i’m still learning?”. Then in my writing career it became, “Will people even want to read this?” and “what do I know about writing a book?”
With these questions haunting my every move, it was hard to move forward in both and be this happy ready to go girl. At the end of the day, I really just realized confidence doesn’t have to be what you feel 100%. It just has to be what you choose to show people. When you play confident, you end up just becoming it organically – or at least that’s what happened with me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With my writing, the last two books have been poetry and prose. In this, not only have I pulled from my memories to write about but also from what I’ve seen in my loved ones around me. I try to show and write about various topics, from different points of view. Not only that, but one of my main artistic choices I make is figuring out how to tell the story. Whether it be through colors or through flowers, or how an exhibit from this collection may look like — it all plays in to how I come up with the theme and purpose behind the book.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
For me, I think my best characteristic is to be able to step back and really look at what is going on before making my next moves. Both in my professional career and in my writing, I like to take the time to take a pause and step back from my work and really look at the big picture. What is being impacted? What details are missing? What is something that the common person would see looking at this, that maybe I am not seeing because I have been so absorbed by it?
