Check Out Mike Montrey’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Montrey.

Hi Mike, let’s start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey as a musician after being serendipitously gifted my first guitar by my mother at age 16. By age 24, I was performing in venues across the country and writing songs for albums. At age 45, I recorded 6 albums under my name and toured the country as a guitarist with the iconic rock act. The Samples started a highly successful music teaching business and have recently been developing music therapy programs online for those in need.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always obstacles. Any time you are self-employed, especially in the arts, it takes a great deal of discipline and perseverance to be successful and maintain the integrity of your art. Capitalism isn’t built for artists of any kind, so you must be multi-faceted.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My primary focus has always been songwriting, but long before I honed that skill, my mother gifted me a guitar at age 16. At the time, I had no skill, but over the next five years of my life, it became my sole focus, and by age 25, I had studied theory and jazz and formed my first band, water, with an album of songs I wrote. After that, the career took flight. I spent several years touring with Colorado Rock legends. The Samples formed my band, Mike Montrey Band, for which I have recorded 6 albums. Throughout that process, I built my teaching business, which I hold concerts for twice a year, and began work as a music therapist. What is unique about my story is how the different ways of creating and bringing music to people come together. That influences the creative output greatly.

What quality or characteristic is most important to your success?
Being open and genuine in music, teaching and therapy is vital to connecting.
