Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Blaine.
Hi Natasha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I remember writing my first song when I was in first grade. I wrote the lyrics on a piece of paper and tucked it into the drawer in my bedside table. I hummed the song while I was supposed to be doing my math homework, sang it on the swings at recess, and showed it to my friends. Singing has always been like breathing to me; it would feel unnatural to ever stop. My first experiences with music were with my family. My grandmother taught me jazz standards before I learned how to read. I started learning guitar when I became obsessed with The Beatles after my mom played their one album in the car.
I didn’t really start considering music as a career until much later when I was in college. I realized that nothing else made sense to me like music did. After spending a few months studying abroad in London, I decided to make a leap and try to pursue a career as an artist–wouldn’t I always wonder what would have happened if I had just gone for it? Why not give it everything I have?
After living in London for a few months, I moved to Nashville, TN and started recording my songs, playing open mics, and getting involved in as much in the music scene as I could. Only about two years later, I released my first EP and played sold-out shows in iconic Nashville venues.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like all creative career paths, I’ve had a hard time landing on exactly what my identity is, musically speaking. But the more I create, the more I’m able to lock into what feels authentic for me to put out into the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer and songwriter. The music I do is R&B/pop that is rooted in jazz. I would say most people know me for my voice; I studied jazz in school, and that background definitely shows in my music.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Authenticity is the most important thing to me. I want to connect with people through my music, and I can’t imagine being able to create powerful connections without creating music that feels real, raw, and unapologetically true to me.
