Today we’d like to introduce you to Nic Ling.
Hi Nic, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well I started out early on in High School, up to that point I knew I wanted to be a musician, I just couldn’t settle on an instrument that I enjoyed playing all the time until I listened to the first Led Zeppelin album and as I got deeper into the album.
I really paid attention to what was going on with the drums, I felt like I connected very heavily to it and after the first time listening to the album I knew I wanted to play drums. It was like suddenly this pandora’s box opened of just such deep interest in percussion, I felt rhythm everywhere in everything, and the music I was listening to really made me think about that.
Today, I live in Nashville and I play in a band with my buddies called “Southport”, all of them are just incredibly talented and play with such a high amount of passion I feel so lucky to be a part of the band.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but I feel like music and entertainment overall isn’t an easy road, to quote Bon Scott, “it’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n’ roll” man.
I have been through many bands, some amazing some not as amazing but in each one, I learn a lesson, whether it’s how to manage and run a band, or how to be a better listener and lock in with the other guys while your playing, each band has definitely been a unique and different experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a drummer, there is no simpler way to put it than that, I specialize mainly in Rock and Metal, however, I can play a variety of genres outside of that including Funk, Country, RnB, and Hip-Hop.
I think the thing I am most proud of today is being completely self-taught.
I have never taken a single drum lesson in my life, however that being said I always keep an open ear and over the years have surrounded myself with people who play a variety of percussion genres, Marching Band, Metal drumming, Pop drumming, Latin percussion, etc.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Honestly, I can’t say there is anything to be completely honest, most people that know me and are close to me know me very well I would say, and vice-versa.
