Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Serrano.
Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I grew up in the church, the daughter of a pastor’s kid. I always knew I was queer, but I never thought it was an option possible for me. Through a long series of painful situations (including being fired from a church I served on staff at – for being gay), I finally started to accept myself as I am. Last June, I was given the opportunity to share my story and come out on Good Morning America. As of October of this year, I wrapped up my record, which goes a little deeper into my wrestle with faith and my sexuality.
I have been working with Resin8 in Nashville over the last four years and enjoy making music for TV and film, as well as for my artistry and expression. I’ve grown exponentially over the last year, as I’ve learned to take up my own space, and not be afraid of what people think. It’s amazing how much energy that wastes. I was able to co-produce a lot of my records, and I have stepped into more production myself. This year feels like the start of things I never thought imaginable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I grew up within a Christian denomination that preached if you act on gay desires, you will go to hell. I grew up, very tormented my entire life with the fear of being punished, not to mention treated like an outcast. In 2018, I was fired from a church I worked at for being gay.
It was one of those churches that make you believe all are welcome, but it was a bait-and-switch situation. I lost a lot of friends and was betrayed by a lot of people. But I’m finally in the space now where I feel safe and sure of myself and sure of the people in my life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer, songwriter, artist, multi-instrumentalist, and Producer. I focus mostly on writing for my artistry, but I also do a lot of work in the film and TV space. I’ve been lucky enough to get cuts and placements for shows like Grey’s Anatomy, the good doctor, the L Word generation, Q, Selling Sunset, and this year‘s Oscar promo. I’m most proud of telling the whole world who I am, not being ashamed, and being able to make music from a really honest place. I’m also really proud of that Oscar’s placement.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to be radically authentic. I’m also stepping into a lane where I can do it all myself, which you don’t see a lot of females doing. Not yet. I hope to change that!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m actually 3/4 Puerto Rican even though I look like a basic white girl.
