Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Pearson
Hi Noah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
REST began at 2AM in a college dorm parking lot in Kirkland Washington. Unable to sleep due to anxiety, and unable to practice without waking my roommate, I would stand under an awning outside to hide from the rain and play guitar. It was my first year at a religious school, and I was experiencing the worst depression of my life in an unfamiliar place surrounded by unfamiliar people. Faced with my parent’s divorce and a growing distrust of the christianity I had shaped my world around, I felt broken and alone. Seeking an avenue to express these feelings, I began writing music. By the time I graduated, I had written the songs that would make up my first EP, and recorded them with the expertise of a new friend and producer, Jameson Gerdon.
Over the next two years, he and I slowly chipped away at our first album. “Self Reflection”. I would write lyrics and record simple acoustic guitar demos, and when our work schedules aligned, we would record in a spare room of my dad’s house.
In May of 2023, I moved to Nashville. I hope to find new friends and new opportunities here as we work on finishing our second album.
My goal with music has always been the same, to be vulnerable with the heaviest parts of myself in order to prove that no matter how lonely you may feel, you are never truly alone.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many challenges on the path so far. I think it is a particularly difficult time to be making a living as an independent artist, and I regularly have to step away from music to focus on making money in other ways. In the process of moving to Nashville, I bought a bus to tour with and it broke down beyond repair within 6 months. It can be easy to get discouraged but I know that no matter what shape it takes music will always be a part of my life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make Indie Folk/Rock music about the uncomfortable realities of living with depression and anxiety. I hope that, through my music, others struggling with their mental health will be able to relate to my experience, and also in seeing that experience from an outside perspective, learn to be a bit kinder to themselves.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I consider this entire path to be a risk. I risk financial stability to be an artist. I risk my comfort when I speak openly about the darkest parts of my mind. I took the risk of uprooting my entire life to move halfway across the country to pursue a career in music. Everything, including inaction, carries a risk, so it is best to move towards the things you want and deal with the problems as they come.
