Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora Tirrell.
Hi Nora, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out loving music as a kid. I took piano lessons through childhood and discovered a love of writing from the time I was in elementary school. This developed into songwriting over time and propelled me to apply to my dream school, Berklee College of Music, which I was accepted into early admission in 2013. Throughout my time at Berklee, I worked hard on my songwriting skills and was excited to move to music city a year after I graduated.
When I first moved to Nashville, I was playing 2-3 shows a week – writers’ rounds, solo shows, etc. I felt like I was living my dream until Covid changed a lot of things for my life as a musician. Since Covid, I have only played two shows, not gigging nearly as much as I did pre-Covid. I hope to get back on the stage soon and release new music before the end of this year. I put out a single last January after going 3 years without releasing any new music. I hope to release a full EP by the end of 2021.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a musician certainly has not been a smooth road. I faced many challenges in college, most having to do with self-esteem and self-confidence. I’m currently feeling challenged personally as I try to find my way in Nashville, and figure out how to do music more full-time. This city is full of extremely talented, hard-working creatives and I think we’re all after the same goal – to create music with one another.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Primarily, I am a songwriter. I do not yet write songs for a living but this has always been my dream – to write and perform my music. I think my honesty and easy-going nature set me apart from other creatives. I love working with other people and collaborating on songs with fellow songwriters.
I’m most proud of the music I’ve written in the last year. While I haven’t written hundreds of songs, the songs I’ve written over the last two years are some of the best work I’ve ever done and I’m proud to say that.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
While it sounds corny, the most important thing I’ve learned about being a musician is to honestly be yourself. People can see right through you when you’re not being authentic or trying to put on an act for the sake of others. When I first moved to Nashville, I thought that in order to be noticed and taken seriously, I had to write and sing country songs.
But that really isn’t my thing, and I soon discovered that when I started performing and writing the music that I genuinely felt connected to, that’s what people enjoyed and what grabbed their attention. So, I really do think being your authentic self is the best thing you can do in a city full of musicians.
