Today we’d like to introduce you to Omcat
Hi OmCat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before OmCat,Ty Fly (Guitar/Vox), Russell Somer (Guitar/Vox), and Josh Reynolds (Drums) started a Grateful Dead cover band called, Tin Roof Cats. They spent the better part of 2 years learning the repertoire and performing frequently around Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Middle Tennessee. When they answered the calling to focus on their original music, they recruited Russell’s longtime friend, Bobby Green on Keys and local bassist and Belmont Graduate, Will Harris to round out the lineup. The first official jam session in Early 2024 was inspired and resulted in a handful of new music. The first official time playing “Live” together, was the recording/filming of the “Smokerise Sessions” which was their first release on YouTube and Bandcamp.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road is never smooth with a bunch of hippies. OmCat is a band that leans into improvisation as part of the live show experience. Translating these into short term content on social media is a code that very few have cracked. It’s all about the live show.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Being in OmCat is like being in a big bowl of Gumbo. There are so many diverse ingredients and flavors that blend together to make a delicious dish, unique to every small part of the soup. Each individual player has the freedom to bring any idea (full song or just a riff) to the table to be worked out into a song. This creates a wonderful synergy where OmCat’s music is unique to the personality and musical stylings of each individual member. OmCat’s music is inspired by all types of influences. These include, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Folk, Metal, Electronic, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Reggae, and might as well include Polka and Klezmer for the sake of it!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Most of us didn’t know each other during Covid-19.
