Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Patts.
Hi Patricia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a child actor. I was 3 the first time I auditioned for something, It was oddly, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I was so much smaller than the other kids I didn’t get the role. After the family moved to Los Angeles, we got involved in a theatre in Pasadena called Jesters Playhouse and we helped with everything! We built sets, painted, ran sound and lights, made costumes, sold tickets and concessions, as well as being on stage… and the whole family did it. It was a great training ground and a lot of fun. I don’t remember how we got our first agent, but from there we started auditioning for commercials, which I got a couple, before auditioning for Normal Lear and a TV show of the New Little Rascals. Eventually, the TV concept wasn’t working so they made it into a movie. For some reason everything that I worked on didn’t make it into the movie. Who knows why. Shortly after, I auditioned for the musical Annie. They were looking for the cast of a touring company, which would be mostly in LA. I was hired for the title role. While in San Francisco for the summer, Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts came to see the show and offered me the role of Peppermint Patty. I did 2 specials, She’s a Good Skate Charlie Brown and You’re the Greatest, Charlie Brown and a movie, Bon Voyage Charlie Brown and don’t come back! Today, I travel around the country going to Comic Con’s and meeting fans. It’s a fun way to make a living!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I moved to Nashville, there really wasn’t that much work for a union actor, so it just sort of fell away. In 2019, one of the Annie Cast mates, Jennifer Cihi (the singing voice for Sailor Moon) told me about Comic Cons and that I should go, that I would have fun. I honestly thought she was crazy, who would want to meet me? But I adore going to them. Its a struggle sometimes to get shows to bring me in… I don’t think a lot of them understand just how important these characters are to fans. So many people relate to these characters! They know a Lucy, or they are Charlie Brown! So many relate to Peppermint Patty and how she just didn’t “fit the mold” of other people. And of course, Everyone Loves the Joy of Snoopy! But, it’s my happy place, so I keep reaching out to shows!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am actress, singer, songwriter, voice actor. Most known for Peppermint Patty in the Peanuts cartoons.
How do you think about luck?
I had someone tell me recently how “lucky” I was to have some things come along. I have a hard time with the idea that it was luck. I mean.. I did dozens of shows before I auditioned for Annie. It’s not like I was sitting at a soda counter and someone sat next to me and asked me if I could sing. I worked at it. I had some dance lessons, vocal lessons, I performed all the time. I knew so many other people who were out there working and meeting people and knew what was going on in town. The Annie audition was an open casting audition, which means anybody could come and sign in and audition. I was prepared for that audition Because of all the work I had done the previous four years. I think it’s weird that I look like Peppermint Patty and sound like her and honestly have a bit of her personality! But again, I don’t think that’s luck. I think it’s more prepared meets opportunities.
